Sewanee, Tenn. (AP) – George Dickinson, a short and wiry tennis player from the University of Chattanooga, won the NCAA College-Division singles championship here today, defeating Bob McCannon of Rollins College 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
Rollins won the team title in the semifinals Friday, ending a three-year reign by Los Angeles State College.
The fourth-ranked Dickinson was the only seeded player to make the semifinals. He was the lone entry of the University of Chattanooga.
The doubles championship was won by McCannon and Neils Menko of Rollins 6-2, 6-4.
The final team standings were Rollins , 17; Los Angeles State College, 7; Middle Tennessee State and Chattanooga, 6 each; Washington at St. Louis and Wittenberg, 5; Randolph-Macon, one each. Montana State and Mac Murray failed to score.
Dickinson defeated Jay Leistner of Mississippi College 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals. Dickinson opened with a three-set win over Washington University's Harry Burrus, Jr. (2-6, 6-1, 6-4).
