Mocs 31 - The Citadel 9
The pressure of a number three national ranking, a Homecoming crowd, and major college foe The Citadel cannot be measured on a quarterback who is starting his first game, but Richard Manning didn't even think of the pressure as he completed 19 of 33 passes for 216 yards to ignite a 31-9 massacre of the Bulldogs.
The Citadel managed three first downs as they drove to a first-quarter field goal and a 3-0 lead. After that drive, the Bulldogs got no more first downs and only 5 yards total offense during the remainder of the game.
Freshman Tommy Hall replaced injured Bucky Wolford and scored two second-quarter TDs in a 24-point second stanza. But the real star of the game was safety Jim Hennessey, who doubled over on offense, and missed only about 3 of the 140 plays during the game.
Henry Chandler, Alan Farrell, Joe Cardwell and Buford Self wrecked the Bulldogs' running game early by teaming up on star halfback Jim McMillan on his first carry and rendering him ineffective for the night
