Lady Mocs Defeat Marshall 6-5 in Season Opener

Gainesville, Fla. ? Junior shortstop Tara Tembey led the Chattanooga Lady Mocs to a victory in its season opener with a three-run triple in the fifth inning against Marshall at the Cox Communications Classic in Gainesville, Fla., on Friday afternoon.

The Lady Mocs (1-0) hit .357 against the Thundering Herd (3-4) and a .367 on base percentage. On the defensive side, the team was perfect with no errors.

Freshman Brooke Loudermilk started the game pitching 5.2 innings and facing 23 batters before being relieved by senior Ashley Frizzell who captured the win.

In the first inning, the Lady Mocs were led by Cochran with a lead-off single to the right side before stealing second. Cochran advanced to third on a ground out by Cuticchia before back-to-back strikeouts to close out the inning.

Senior Brittney Whittier was the lone Lady Moc to get on base in the second on a single through the middle. And in the third, Cochran was walked and advanced to second on another Cuticchia ground out.

Marshall scored off of a two-run homer by Rachel Folden in the top of the third to put the Thundering Herd up 2-0.

But in the fifth inning Chattanooga gained momentum starting with sophomore Toni Hutchison's lead-off single followed by a single from freshman Lynleigh Hurndon and another single from sophomore Ashley Cuticchia. Junior Tara Tembey drove in three runs with her two-out triple to right field to take the lead 3-2. Then senior Alyssa Edwards drove Tembey home with a single to right field.

In the sixth, Marshall rallied to score three runs on two hits and two walks to put the Thundering Herd up 5-4. But the Lady Mocs scored three runs to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth before three quick outs in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Marshall was led by Folden with three hits on four at bats, one run and two RBIs. And Joscelyn Bitner had two hits on four at bats with one run and one RBI.

The Lady Mocs take on host No. 20 Florida Gators (6-1) at 6:15 p.m. Friday evening before facing Fordham and No. 28 NC State on Saturday.
