Lady Mocs Finish Second at Panera Bread Challenge; Defeat Miami (Ohio)

Chattanooga, Tenn. ? Sophomore Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) hit a lead off solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the Lady Mocs' 4-3 win over Miami of Ohio Sunday afternoon.

Chattanooga (6-6) finished second in the 2007 Panera Bread Challenge to Bowling Green based on the third deciding criteria of total runs scored. The teams did not play each other and had the same number of runs scored against them (3). But Bowling Green had 26 runs scored compared to Chattanooga's 17.

Senior Alyssa Edwards (Geneva, N.Y.) extended her hitting streak to four games with two singles in three at bats improving her batting average on the season to .406 to lead the team.

Freshman pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (Locust Grove, Ga.) earned her fourth win of the season tallying eight strikeouts on 32 batters faced.

The RedHawks (6-8) struck first in the top of the second off of a Breanna Robinson lead off home run and was followed by a Briana Burke lead off home run in the fourth.

Chattanooga answered with senior Jeannie Cochran (Maryville, Tenn.) scoring in the bottom of the third off of Ashley Cuticchia's (Rising Fawn, Ga.) double to right center.

Senior Brittney Whittier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored the second run for the Lady Mocs in the bottom of the fifth. That was followed by Upchurch's home run and Cuticchia's run in the sixth on one of Edward's singles.

Miami was led by Burke and Alexis Javier with two hits. Burke also added two RBIs.

The Lady Mocs host non-conference opponent UAB on Tuesday evening in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Frost Stadium.
