Lady Mocs Grab 70-65 Win Over Davidson; Retain Share of Southern Conference Lead

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Chattanooga women's basketball team held its spot atop the Southern Conference standings Monday night with a 70-65 win over Davidson in front of 1,412 fans at the McKenzie Arena.

The Lady Mocs improve to 18-6 overall and 11-2 in league play and remain tied with Western Carolina with the Lady Catamounts 77-68 win over Appalachian State tonight in Boone, N.C. Davidson drops a bit further back in the standings at 18-6 overall and 9-4 in the SoCon.

While the Lady Mocs never trailed in the second half, the Wildcats knotted the game twice down the stretch. Chattanooga led by 10 points two times in the latter stanza, but the Wildcats wouldn't go down quietly. Davidson's Kelly Gassie knocked down nine points in a 12-4 run to pull the Wildcats' to within two with 8:52 to play.

Chattanooga stretched the lead to a tenuous five-point margin with six free throws, but Monica Luane erased that edge on a layup followed by a 3-pointer after a missed UTC jumper to tie the game for the sixth time at 58-58 with 4:03 to play.

Davidson would knot up the game once more at 63-63 at the 1:30 mark on a 3-pointer from Katie Hamilton, but UTC would outscore the Wildcats down the stretch 7-2 to claim its 11th SoCon victory.

Chattanooga shot 50 percent in the first half, but were just 3-for-12 from beyond the arc and 1-for-2 from the free throw line. It was a tight game inside with the Lady Mocs edging Davidson 38-34 in the paint. Chattanooga outrebounded the Wildcats 36-33 and scored 15 points off 11 offensive boards. Davidson scored 18 points off 12 Chattanooga turnovers and gave up nine points to UTC on 13 miscues.

Alex Anderson led all scorers with 29 points and just missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds. She was 12-of-15 from the field and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Laura Hall hit a pair of 3-pointers and was 3-for-4 from the free throw line, scoring 11 points. Kristen Spann just missed double digits with nine points. Jenaya Wade-Fray pulled down seven rebounds in the game, including four offensive boards.

Gassie led the Wildcats with 15 points and Jessica Mitchell scored 12 with five rebounds. Katie Hamilton was the third Davidson player to score double-digits with 11 points, going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Mercedes Robinson had eight points and a team-best eight boards while Danielle Hemerka pulled seven off the glass.

The Lady Mocs will travel to Cullowhee, N.C., to face Western Carolina in a dual of the league's top teams on Saturday afternoon. The game will tip off at 1:30 p.m. to be aired Sunday on CSS at 6:30 p.m. Davidson will host Georgia Southern Saturday at Belk Arena at 2 p.m.

Chattanooga retains its share of the SoCon lead with the win. Western Carolina defeated Appalachian State 77-68.
