Lady Mocs Shut Out in 2-0 Loss to Marshall

Chattanooga, Tenn. ? The Lady Mocs were held to only two hits as Chattanooga (17-17) fell to Marshall 2-0 in the teams' doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

Senior pitcher Ashley Frizzell (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) was charged with the loss with her record now 6-7, but had four strikeouts, one putout and one assist.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the first inning with each team having one batter reaching first. Marshall's Kristina Knecht reached on a hit before stealing second, and junior shortstop Tara Tembey (Folsom, Calif.) reached on a hit by pitch.

The Lady Mocs gave up another hit in the top of the second in a double by Caitlin Jackson, but still held the Herd scoreless.

Sophomore third baseman Toni Hutchison (Madison, Tenn.) answered in the bottom of the inning with her two-out double to left center before being left on base with the score still sitting at 0-0.

At the top of the third, the Herd picked up two hits with Knecht reaching on a fielder's choice before advancing to third on Rachel Folden's single to the right side. Knecht stole home after Folden's attempt to steal second with both runners advancing safely to make the score 1-0.

Sophomore right fielder Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) led off the bottom of the third with a walk before senior left fielder Jeannie Cochran (Maryville, Tenn.) reached safely to first on a sacrifice bunt and advanced Upchurch to second.

Both runners reached second and third, respectively, with a ground out by sophomore center fielder Ashley Cuticchia (Rising Fawn, Ga.). Tembey was intentionally walked to load the bases. With sophomore first baseman Rachel Norris (Ringgold, Ga.) at the plate, Upchurch led off of third base too far before being picked off for the second out. Norris flied out to left field to retire the inning with the score still at 1-0.

Frizzell recorded her third strikeout of the game in the top of the fourth to help close out the inning scoreless. But the Lady Mocs were held to three up, three down leading into the top of the fifth.

Marshall picked up another run in the top of the fifth after the first two batters reached on a hit by pitch and a single advancing to second and third. Folden was intentionally walked before Samantha Rodriguez drove Bertoldo home with a sacrifice fly to left field making the score 2-0 before the inning ended.

The Herd picked up nine hits led by Caitlyn Jackson's three for three. Pitcher Abigail Harter also had four strikeouts.

The Lady Mocs will play game two of the doubleheader approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
