Lady Mocs Win 7-1 Over Tennessee-Martin Saturday Afternoon

Chattanooga, Tenn. ? For the second game in a row, senior second baseman Brittney Whittier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to lead the Lady Mocs over Tennessee-Martin Saturday afternoon 7-1.

Senior pitcher Ashley Frizzell (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) earned her third win of the season with seven strikeouts on 27 batters faced throwing a total of 122 pitches.

The Skyhawks jumped to an early 1-0 lead with Stacey Weaver walking before stealing second. She came home on a Laura Roberts single to the right side before two-straight Frizzell strikeouts retired the inning.

The Lady Mocs (9-9) came out swinging after senior leftfielder Jeannie Cochran (Maryville, Tenn.) walked before stealing second, and sophomore centerfielder Ashley Cuticchia (Rising Fawn, Ga.) reached on a throwing error before advancing to second and driving in Cochran.

Whittier stepped up to the plate with one out and drilled a ball out to right center on a 1-0 count, driving in Cuticchia to make the score 3-0.

Junior designated player Tara Tembey (Folsom, Calif.) hit a single to left field before scoring on a freshman catcher Brittany Eason (Chattanooga, Tenn.) double to right center making the score at the end of the inning 4-1.

The Lady Mocs got up on the board again led by a leadoff double by sophomore third baseman Toni Hutchison (Madison, Tenn.) in the bottom of the fourth. She was advanced to third by junior rightfielder Ashlan Clarkson (Chickamauga, Ga.) ground out to third and was brought home by a Cuticchia single making the score 5-0.

Later in the same inning, after she advanced on the throw after her base hit, Cuticchia scored on an attempted pickoff to close the inning with an overall score of 6-1.

Cochran scored again in the bottom of the sixth, reaching first on a hit by pitch before advancing home on a wild pitch to score the final run of the game.

Tembey extends her hitting streak to five straight games with her career longest being six games in 2004.

The Lady Mocs face the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 4:45 p.m. later today in day two of the 2007 Frost Classic.
