Chattanooga Defeats Mercer 9-1 in Six Innings

Clearwater, Fla. ? The Lady Mocs scored nine runs on 11 hits and three errors to defeat Mercer 9-1 Thursday evening.

Chattanooga (13-12) jumped above .500 led by strong hitting by freshmen shortstop Tia Blosser (Knoxville, Tenn.) and catcher Brittany Eason (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and sophomores third baseman Toni Hutchison (Madison, Tenn.) and Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) with two hits each.

The Lady Mocs scored in the first inning off of a senior first baseman Alyssa Edwards' (Geneva, N.Y.) double to right field scoring sophomore center fielder Ashley Cuticchia (Rising Fawn, Ga.), who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Bears' Jamie Madruga hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the first to tie the score 1-1 going into the second.

But Chattanooga answered back in the form of five runs on four hits and one error. Eason reached on a hit and scored on a Hutchison double. Hutchison scored on an error by Mercer making the score 3-1.

Upchurch, senior left fielder Jeannie Cochran (Maryville, Tenn.) and Cuticchia all scored on a Blosser double after Cochran reached on a sacrifice bunt and Cuticchia was intentionally walked, making the score 6-1.

In the top of the third, the Lady Mocs scored two more runs after senior second baseman Brittney Whittier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) walked and Hutchison had her second hit of the game. Whittier scored on a wild pitch, and Hutchison scored on a Upchurch double to right field making the score 8-1.

The final run of the game came from a Blosser single, advancing on an error before advancing on a sacrifice fly and scoring on a Whittier single.

Senior pitcher Ashley Frizzell (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) improved her record to 4-5 on five strikeouts and five assists.

Mercer was led by Madruga and Ashley Anderson with two hits each on three at bats.

The Lady Mocs face No. 24 North Carolina State and Michigan State on Friday. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
