Big Fifth Inning Lifts Chattanooga over Western Carolina

Cullowhee, N.C. ? Two runs for the Lady Mocs (25-22, 6-2 SoCon) in the top of the fifth lifted the team over the Western Carolina Catamounts (18-23, 3-5 SoCon) in game two Saturday afternoon 4-2.

Freshman pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (Locust Grove, Ga.) moved up another spot on the single season strikeouts list into the No. 7 spot with 201 total strikeouts on the season. She also picked up the win improving her record to 15-9, 3-1 SoCon.

Chattanooga started off the game strong offensively with senior left fielder Jeannie Cochran (Maryville, Tenn.) picking up a hit before stealing second. Sophomore center fielder Ashley Cuticchia (Rising Fawn, Ga.) picked up another hit for the Lady Mocs, advancing Cochran to third, before she stole second.

Senior first baseman Alyssa Edwards (Geneva, N.Y.) picked up her 26th RBI of the season on her sacrifice foul fly to left field to put the Lady Mocs on the board first with a score of 1-0 going into the bottom of the first.

Junior shortstop Tara Tembey (Folsom, Calif.) hit her fifth home run of the season on the first pitch of the top of the second to boost the margin to 2-0 after two innings at bat.

Western Carolina's Lauren Ross fired back on her one-out solo home run over the left field fence making the score 2-1.

The Catamounts scored again in the bottom of the third on Stephanie Beatty's RBI one-out single to the right side, scoring Nikki Bost to tie the score at 2-2.

The Lady Mocs started the swinging of the bats again in the top of the fourth with Edwards reaching on a walk before advancing to third on sophomore third baseman Toni Hutchison's (Madison, Tenn.) double down the left field line.

Tembey was intentionally walked to load the bases. Freshman catcher Lynleigh Hurndon (McDonough, Ga.) reached first on an error by the second baseman, but Edwards was thrown out at home, leaving the bases still loaded as the inning closed after sophomore right fielder Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) grounded out.

Loudermilk relieved senior pitcher Ashley Frizzell (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) in the bottom of the fourth. Frizzell threw four strikeouts and gave up five hits in 3.0 innings pitched.

Cochran reached on a walk to lead off the top of the fifth before advancing to second on Cuticchia's sacrifice bunt. She went to third on a wild pitch during freshman designated player Brittany Eason's (Chattanooga, Tenn.) at bat. Eason walked.

Edwards tallied another RBI on her double down the left field line, scoring Cochran and sending Eason to third on one out. Hutchison scored Eason on a single to left field before advancing to second on the throw making the score 4-2.

Hurndon picked up a hit in the top of the sixth before advancing to second on Upchurch's single down the left line. Cochran advanced both runners and loaded the bases, but Cuticchia lined into a triple play with Hurndon and Cochran both out leaving the score 4-2.

The Lady Mocs allowed one hit in the bottom of the sixth putting runners on first and second after Mollie Fowler reached on a walk, but both were left on as the sixth inning closed.

Eason led off the seventh with a walk, her second of the game, before advancing to second on Edwards' sacrifice bunt. Eason took another base on a passed ball but was left on as the game went into the bottom of the seventh.

Western Carolina was led by Ross with the solo home run. Five other players had one hit each. Savannah Filley was charged with the loss with her record now at 4-5.
