ROCKY FACE, GA.?The Chattanooga men's golf team completed its first Carpet Capital Collegiate with a ninth-place finish at the elite event held at The Farm Golf Club.
The Mocs were ninth heading into Sunday's final round and recorded its best team score of the weekend with a 293. Derek Rende and Jonathan Hodge carded the first rounds under par for the Mocs in the tournament with Rende turning in a 3-under par 69, while Hodge posted a 71.
Rende's round was good enough to vault him from an overnight tie for 23rd into a tie for the 10th spot at even par 216. Hodge finished one stroke back at 1-over par in a tie for 15th.
Rende birdied his first two holes and added another on the 7th to turn at 3-under par. Another birdie on 17 moved him briefly to 4-under, but a lone bogey on the last hole was good for a 69 and a top 10 finish.
Hodge also got off to a quick start with a birdie on the second hole, but made four bogeys over the next eight holes to stand on the 11th tee at 3-over par. Hodge responded with birdies on the 11th and 12th, followed by two more on the 15th and 16th to get back to the red numbers with a 71.
Ben Rickett made a birdie on 18 to post a 75, while Tyler Neff and Fredrik Qvicker both struggled on the back nine to record scores of 78.
“We did a few good things this weekend” said head coach Mark Guhne. “We played with the big boys this weekend and we didn't back down. Derek and Jon stepped it up today when we needed it. It is good for our team to watch the way that these other teams handle themselves on a tough golf course in tough conditions. I have no doubt that this experience will make us a better team.”
The Mocs team score of 5-over par, 293 was its best of the weekend, one stroke better than yesterday's second round. This was the Mocs' first time competing in the Carpet Capital which featured 16 of the 18 teams either ranked or receiving votes in the top 25.
Alabama came from behind to snatch the team title from South Carolina on the first playoff hole. The Crimson Tide started the day seven strokes behind the Gamecocks, but managed a 6-under par round to force a playoff. Chesson Hadley of host Georgia Tech won the individual title at 8-under par.
