The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team took advantage of a pin and a Chattanooga forfeit to defeat the 10th-ranked Mocs, 21-16 Sunday. The dual match was held at Lithia Springs High School in Douglasville, Ga.
The Panthers, 1-2-1, recorded their first dual-match victory of the season while UTC, 5-2, fell for the second consecutive match.
Fourth-ranked Moza Fay secured the win for Northern Iowa with a pin of UTC's Nick Davis in the 165-pound match, the second-to-last match of the day. Fay's victory pushed UNI's lead to 21-12 with one remaining. The Panthers also received six team points from a forfeit at 133 pounds. UTC starter Steve Hromada was unable to compete because of injuries suffered at last week's Midlands Championships.
Fay and UTC's Lloyd Rogers were the only two wrestlers to garner bonus points in their respective matches. In the final match, 13th-ranked Rogers scored a 17-6 major decision over 17th-ranked Alex Dolly at 174.
The teams traded wins in the opening four matches. UNI's Andy O'Loughlin began the dual with an 8-5 win over Josh Edmondson at 184 pounds. UTC's Matt Koz bested Andrew Anderson, 10-4 at 197 to even the score. Koz is ranked 13th nationally while Anderson is 16th.
Dustin Bauman shut out the Mocs' Mat Lettner 2-0 at the heavyweight meeting, but eighth-ranked Javier Maldonado tied the score at 6-6 with a 125-pound victory over Caleb Flores, 11-8.
Following the forfeit at 133, UNI's C.J. Ettelson shut out 16th-ranked Cody Cleveland, 6-0 at 141 to give the Panthers a 15-6 cushion. The Mocs put together back-to-back decisions at 149 and 157 to get within reach before Fay's pin at 165.
Twentieth-ranked Joey Knox edged Charlie Ettelson, 4-2 at 149, and Seth Garvin, also ranked 20th, outpointed Tyson Reiner at 157, 12-6 to put the Mocs within three, 15-12.
UTC defeated the Panthers 23-15 last season in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and the two teams could meet again this coming weekend as UNI hosts the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Saturday and Sunday.
