KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- In a showdown in-state rivals, the Chattanooga men's basketball (0-1) team fell to Tennessee 114-75 Saturday night in Knoxville.
Tennessee's high-powered offense was the story in the game as the Vols (1-0) had six players in double figures and shot 59 percent from the field, including 38 percent from three-point range.
The Volunteers showed its presence in the paint throughout the contest, outscoring the Mocs 62-16 inside.
Stephen McDowell led the Mocs in the contest with 20 points. The senior shot 7-for-13 (54%) from the field and 4-for-6 (66%) from beyond the arc.
Nicchaeus Doaks and Ty Patterson were also key figures in the Mocs' offense with 16 points apiece in the loss. Doaks led the team in rebounds with nine, while Khalil Hartwell finished with eight boards.
Tennessee's Tyler Smith led all scorers on the evening with 21 points. Cameron Tatum pitched in with 19 and Wayne Chism had the game's only double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Vols went into the break 60-37 after shooting 61 percent in the opening half. Tennessee was able to make noise from behind the arc as well in the first half, as the team shot 8-for-16 (50%) from three.
In the beginning of the second half, Tennessee extended its lead to 74-39 thanks to a 14-2 run. The Volunteers shot 59 percent from the field in the final half, en route to the 114-75 win.
The Mocs will be back on the road for its next contest on Monday night against Missouri. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST from the Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.
