Cleveland Tops Chattanooga Finishers at Kaufman-Brand Open

Cody Cleveland led the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga contingent at the Kaufman-Brand Open hosted Saturday by the University of Nebraska-Omaha.  The junior All-America finished second in the Elite Division of the prestigious event.

 

Cleveland had a bye to open as the top seed in his class.  He started off with a technical fall of Stephen Makuka from Air Force at 5:21 up in the match 15-0.  Cleveland followed with a major decision, 15-2, over Cory Vombaur of Wyoming and a 6-4 decision over Curtis Salazar of Nebraska.  He then dropped a 5-3 decision to Mike Thorn of Minnesota to finish second.

 

Other strong performances included No. 19 Joey Knox at 157, Seth Garvin at 165, Jason McCroskey at 174 and Cody Sliger at 285.

 

Knox won three straight matches setting up a meeting with No. 6 Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota.  Schlatter took an 8-3 decision, but Knox rebounded to take a 6-4 decision over Tyler Safratowich of Minnesota followed by a 10-6 decision over Northern Illinois' Bryan Deutsch in the third-place match.

 

McCroskey joined Knox as a third-place finisher.  His third-place finish came in the amateur division.  Garvin finished fifth in the elite division, while Sliger was fifth in the amateur.

 

The Mocs return to mat at Maclellan Gym on Sunday, Nov. 30, hosting Va. Tech at 2:30 p.m. and Anderson University at 4.
