Purdue vs. Chattanooga Boxscore
CLEARWATER, Fla. ? Junior third baseman Katie Mitchell's RBI double in the first inning would be all that Purdue (12-5) would need as the Boilermakers shutout Chattanooga (12-10) 3-0 Friday afternoon at the USF Under Armour Invitational.
Purdue got on the board right away as Mitchell connected for her run scoring double in the first inning and was quickly followed by a sacrifice fly by freshman pitcher Suzie Rzegocki to give the Boilermakers a 2-0 first inning lead.
Junior shortstop Candace Curtis added an insurance run in the top of the third inning when she homered down the left field line to make it 3-0.
Freshman pitcher Kandice Irwin (Knoxville, Tenn.) came in at that point and pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out three and allowing only three hits, but it would not be enough as junior pitcher Dana Alcocer pitched four scoreless innings and struck out six batters to collect the win and move to 8-4 on the season.
Freshman pitcher Kaitlin Holloway (Chickamauga, Ga.) took the loss for the Lady Mocs to fall to 2-1 on the season while Rzegocki earned her first save of the season with three scoreless innings of relief.
Katie Mitchell went 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI for Purdue and Curtis finished 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Senior shortstop Tara Tembey (Folsom, Calif.) ripped her fourth double of the season and freshman first baseman Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington Beach, Calif.) singled in the first inning to account for Chattanooga's only two hits on the day.
The Lady Mocs return to action tomorrow in a 12:00 p.m. game against Central Michigan University.
