GREENVILLE, S.C. ? In its Southern Conference opener, Chattanooga (1-4/0-1) was unable to overcome big plays from No. 16 Furman (4-1/1-0) as the Paladins went on to a 35-10 win Saturday at Paladin Stadium.  The loss is the 14th in a row in the series with Furman.

Furman got on the board first thanks to a two-yard touchdown run by Mike Brown. The score was set up by a 71-yard reception by Chris Truss from Jordan Sorrells.  Big play No. 2 for Furman made it 14-0 as Marshan Austin scored on a 13-yard blocked punt return.

Chattanooga was able to get on the board about two minutes later thanks to a 33-yard field goal from junior Craig Camay. The three points capped off a six play, 47-yard drive from the Mocs to put the score at 14-3, which would be the score as both teams went into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Paladins were able set the tone early with a 69-yard touchdown strike from Jordan Sorrells to Chris Truss only 56 seconds into the quarter.  Furman would tack on another score in the period to give the Paladins a 28-3 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Mocs were able to get back on the board in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run from Errol Wynn for the touchdown. Wynn's run finished an eight play, 66-yard drive to make the score 28-10. After an onside kick that was recovered by Furman, the Paladins took advantage of the good field position and were able to put the game away with another touchdown to go up 35-10.

Wynn led the Mocs with 52 yards and a score on 19 carries. Quarterback Jare Gault also contributed with 43 yards on 15 attempts. Through the air the Mocs were 13 of 29 from 146 yards, with Gault (9-19-1) accounting for 103. Sloan Allison (4-10-0) accounted for the other 43 yards as the quarterbacks were under consistent pressure by a strong Furman front which registered four sacks.

Sorrells completed 12 of 20 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns for the Paladins.  Truss, a tight end, was a big target with three catches for 158 yards and a TD.  Furman gained 402 yards of total offense with 178 on the ground.

Defensively, safety Tony Swafford tied for game-high honors with 11 tackles.  CB Buster Skrine added eight tackles and a fumble recovery as the Mocs recovered three fumbles on the day.
