The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team dropped all three matches against top competition at the ACC Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C. today. UTC kept it close against host North Carolina, No. 19 Virginia Tech and No. 4 Wisconsin, but could not come away with a team win any of the three contests.
Sophomore Prescott Garner (West Linn, Ore.) had the strongest day, individually, posting three wins at 125. Garner led a furious rally in the opening match against the Tar Heels in the Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of UNC. Trailing 12-3 in team points, he pinned Jake Corrill with 30 seconds left to pull the Mocs to within three points.
Carolina scored decisions in the next two matches before sophomore Dean Pavlou (Cleveland, Tenn.) posted a 9-4 win over Jake Vonderbruegge at 149 to close the gap to 18-12. Sophomore Josh Condon (Powder Springs, Ga.) tied the score with his pin (2:18) at 157 against Corey Mock. UNC pulled out the 21-18 win after Thomas Scotton ended with a 9-4 decision over junior Brandon Wright (Germantown, Tenn.) at 165.
The Mocs led after three matches against the No. 19 Hokies before falling 25-12. Garner scored a big win over No. 10 Jarrod Garnett 6-3 in the 125 match. Sophomore Niko Brown (Kissimmee, Fla.) opened with a 7-4 decision over Chris Penny at 197. Wright also scored a pin over Matt Epperly late in the contest at 165.
Garner finished out his weekend with a major decision over Wisconsin's Shane McQuade. Chattanooga actually led the fourth-ranked Badgers through seven matches. UW forfeited 197 to open the final contest. Garner's win at 125 was followed by freshman Trevor Herron's (Cleveland, Tenn.) 10-5 victory over Danny Arnel at 141 that gave UTC a 13-9 lead.
Junior Dan Waddell (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored a 4-0 win at 165 to put the Mocs up 16-12, but it was UTC's last points on the night. The Badgers rolled out ranked opponent at 165, 174 and 184 and finished with a major decision, a pin and a decision in the last three matches. That gave UW a 25-16 win over the Mocs.
Chattanooga is now 3-4 on the season and things don't get any better next week. UTC travels to Iowa City, Iowa, to face the No. 7 Hawkeyes on Nov. 26. For full results from that match, be sure to check back to GoMocs.com.
