CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball team cruised to an 82-52 win over Tennessee Wesleyan behind a trio of double digit scorers in an exhibition game Thursday night in McKenzie Arena. Chattanooga led by as many as 31 before settling for the 30-point victory.
Omar Wattad (Johnson City, Tenn.) paced all scorers in his first action for the Mocs after sitting out 2009-10 as a transfer from Georgetown. Wattad had 14 points and five rebounds on five-of-11 shooting. The junior hit four-for-five inside the arc.
Senior DeAntre Jefferson (Bloomington, Ill.) had a double-double with 12 points and game-high 12 boards while adding four steals. He led Chattanooga to a 51-39 advantage on the glass, 34-21 in the second half.
Junior Jahmal Burroughs (New Orleans, La.) also saw his first action for UTC. He had 13 points off the bench on five-for-seven from the field. He led a Mocs bench that out-scored its counterparts 36-17.
Matt Harper has a team-high 12 points and three steals for Tennessee Wesleyan. Matt Towry added 11 points and seven boards. Chattanooga native E'Jay Ward had a game-high eight assists for the Bulldogs.
TWC scored first on a Towry slam dunk on the game's first possession. The Bulldogs led 9-8 when Troy Cage (Baton Rouge, La.) made a steal in the open court and gave the Mocs the lead for good, 10-9, with a dunk of his own with 16:05 left in the first half.
The slam jump-started a 22-4 UTC run that was capped by a Keegan Bell (Hazel Green, Ala.) three-pointer at 7:30 to make it 30-13. The Mocs took their largest lead of the half, 23 (46-23), to intermission on two Josh Odem (Johnson City, Tenn.) free throws.
Despite the slow start, Chattanooga played crisp, unselfish basketball in the opening frame. It went into the break with just three turnovers while scoring 25 points on TWC's 17.
It was a sloppy second half for the Mocs. After shooting 50 percent from the field in the opening stanza, UTC made just 36.4 percent from the floor in the second half, 11.1 percent (2-18) from three-point range. It also coughed up 13 turnovers.
The Mocs steadily built their lead. The lead hit 30 (61-31) on a Burroughs layup with 12:40 remaining. UTC's largest lead of 31 (64-33) came on a Dontay Hampton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) three-ball a possession later.
TWC cut it to a 20-point deficit, 70-50, with 6:36 left on a Harper three, but it would get no closer. The Mocs closed the game on a 12-2 run for the 82-52 win.
UTC shot 43.5 percent from the field, 21.1 percent from beyond the arc making just eight of 38 attempts. On field goal attempts inside three-point range, the Mocs were 22-for-31, 71 percent. The defense limited the Bulldogs to 32.8 percent from the field while forcing 27 turnovers.
Chattanooga opens the season on Friday, Nov. 12, traveling to Tennessee. The 9 p.m., tipoff will be broadcast on SportSouth. The home opener is the following Monday, Nov. 15, with Austin Peay invading the Roundhouse with a 7 p.m., start time.
