CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
softball head coach Frank Reed announced on Monday that Lindsey Ubrun would be
joining the Lady Mocs staff as a volunteer assistant working with the
outfielders and hitters. The move completes the staff for Chattanooga with the
additions of assistant coaches Amy Herrington-Woodard and Lee Dobbins over the past month.
“It was the combination of two things together that made her
stand out,” said Reed. “She was not only an All-American on the field, but she
is an All-American off the field and will bring that work ethic to our program.
Anytime that you can play college athletics and still be one of the top
students in your graduating class is very impressive. We think she can bring
some enthusiasm to the program and instill those same ideals in our kids.”
Ubrun finished her playing career at Missouri in 2009 advancing
to the Women's College World Series and graduated Summa Cum Laude with an
education degree in May.
“I am really looking to start my career as a coach,” said Ubrun.
”I am really excited because this is a wonderful opportunity at a great
program. Chattanooga has some great coaches and I am eager to learn from them.”
A native of Riverside, Calif., Ubrun comes to the Lady Mocs
after a success collegiate career compiling a .313 average with 48 home runs
and 164 RBI with Missouri and Maryland.
“Chattanooga has obviously always been a strong program and
they have so much experience in the postseason,” said Ubrun. “I really think
coach Reed is taking the program to great places and I want to be a part of it by
sharing some of my experiences.”
Ubrun's playing career began at Maryland, where she was selected
to the All-ACC Second Team as a freshman playing under head coach Laura Watten.
She earned ACC Academic team honors following her first two seasons. Looking
for a change of pace, Ubrun decided to transfer before her junior season to
Missouri.
In her first season with the Tigers, she reached the
postseason for the first time. Missouri captured the NCAA Midwest Regional in Iowa
City, Iowa before falling at Alabama in the Super Regionals.
As a senior, the third baseman helped Missouri advance to
the 2009 Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla. by winning the
NCAA Columbia Regional prior to knocking off UCLA in the Super Regionals.
“In my first two years, I never played in the postseason,”
said Ubrun. “So it was an amazing experience to go to Regionals and Super
Regionals during my junior year. Then, we went all the way to the College World
Series my senior season. It was an incredible opportunity and I really loved
every minute of it.”
Ubrun earned the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch
Coaches Association (NFCA) All American (second team) and ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA
Academic All-American (third team), while also receiving All-Big 12 First and
Academic Team recognition following the run to the CWS.
She was also stellar in the classroom as a Dean's List student
following each semester. Urbrun graduated Summa Cum Laude from Missouri in May
2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
“I think coaching and teaching are really similar,” said
Ubrun. “It's just the subject that you are teaching is different. Instead of
teaching history or English, you are teaching softball. The skills and how you
explain things to students or players is the same. It is important to know
how to break things down.”
As a student teacher during her final semester, she taught a
U.S. History class at Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo., and continued to
develop teaching skills as a softball instructor throughout her playing career.
