Postgame Quotes
Samford at Chattanooga
Chattanooga, Tenn. - The McKenzie Arena
Jan. 15, 2011
Chattanooga Head Coach John Shulman
On the win to improve to 6-0 in conference play:
"It is always a root canal when you play Samford. You have to change up the way you do things when you play them, and it is no fun. You can't get an open look because of the defensive. They are under rated defensively and are number one in the league in defensive field goal percentage. Trying to guard them is running around like a crazy guy for thirty seconds. Most big guys play inside, but their big guys play outside. Their little guys go post you up. Their big guys shot threes. It is like a bad Seinfeld episode to tell you truth. It is crazy, but very difficult. I would have taken a win by half a point, and that is what we got. So I am going to be happy and move forward."
On the last minute of play:
"We want to do something in the full court to make them run some clock, and we fouled probably the best free throw shooter in America. We just made it tough. Omar (Wattad) missed two free throws, we missed two block-outs on free throws."
On preparing for College of Charleston Monday:
"I don't think they are going to be hard to get up for. It is the next game on the schedule. After watching them play against Tennessee, I don't think anyone can beat them. They are probably the best team in the league. They are that good. They are good at every position, and are the team to beat in the league. Hopefully, we can find enough energy to make it a war. They didn't have to play Thursday. Give a lot of credit to our kids for battling through it tonight."
Junior Omar Wattad
On the game:
"This whole game was two well coached teams going at it. One team guarding a really slow and sophisticated offense, and the other team guarding an offense that likes to get it and go. It was fun, we came out with a win, and that's what we do, 6-0."
On being 6-0:
"It feels good being 6-0. It feels like we're twelve wins away from being where we want to be. Our record is good, but Charleston is next and we need to take it one game at a time."
On Shulman's frustration in final minutes:
"I take blame for Coach Shulman's frustration. I made a dumb foul, kind of missed a box out, and I missed some free throws. It was tough. I made some mistakes at the end of the game, but it's about all forty minutes. We gritted it out in the end and got the win."
On Samford's Offense:
"I felt like I was back at Georgetown in practice. I knew what they were doing because we ran those plays. It's extremely tough to guard and I think we done a good job. Coach Shulman and the coaching staff gave us a good game plan and we executed well."
On the College of Charleston:
"Loaded is the only word that can describe Charleston. They are loaded from top to bottom. It's the game we want. We're going to be undefeated and we're going to be undefeated. Our goal is to win and we don't back down from anybody. It's just another game, but we've got to bring it."
Junior Keegan Bell
On the game:
"I have to start off by giving Jimmy Tillette huge credit. I've known him forever. The offense he's running and the teams he has are always really good. They always make the game hard and they're never going to go away. They're tough guys, they battle and they played really well tonight. Sometimes we made some bonehead plays, but we made shots and stops at key times. I felt like we guarded them really well in the first half. In the second half, Josh Bedwell went off on us, but I felt like we stayed tough and I am proud of our guys for stepping up to the challenge."
On Omar Wattad's play:
"Omar Wattad is a great player. He makes the big shots. It's not always the last shot or the big shot at the last second where everyone notices it, but he always has that big bucket when we are struggling. He gets us going and big credit to him for playing great. I am proud of him and I knew that's what he'd do. I don't expect anything less of him."
On the home crowd:
"We want it rocking. We always want it rocking and we appreciate the fans coming out tonight. I thought it was a good atmosphere and I thought they helped us out a lot. Especially for these games, I feel like we're worked hard and we want people to come out and support us."
On the transition between Samford and the College of Charleston:
"The only thing that is going to stay the same is the three-point shooting. There will be a lot of three's going up. Charleston is a talented team and we're going to have to crack down. It's probably going to be one of our biggest challenges defensively. Any conference game is a defensive challenge, so we have to get it together. We have to take care of things at home and then we have two big road games. We have to bring it together and do what we do."
Samford Head Coach Jimmy Tillette
On the loss:
"Not exactly an auspices start for us. I think we missed our first thirteen threes. Over the course of the game, they were going to allow us to shoot threes. The problem was we had fifteen turnovers. From our perspective, if they are playing underneath us and giving us threes and we turn it over fifteen times. On the other side of the floor, [Chris] Early was a guy we thought wasn't a great three-point shooter. So we played in front of him, and if he makes them, he makes them. You can't let[Omar] Wattad make five [three pointers]. We lost track of him and didn't communicate. I thought John [Shulman] did a good job of getting his guys to win the game. They did a great job and are 6-0 [in conference], and deserve to be in first place."
On the way Chattanooga played defensively:
"I thought we had some really good looks, but when you are on the road it is hard to consistently make shoots. For us, we had missed opportunities. The biggest point of the game was when they intentional fouled us with the score 48-46, we missed two free throws, and then we get a bad look. That is an empty position for us. We had opportunities, but we shot our self in the foot.
