Postgame Notes
Chattanooga at Furman
Timmons Arena - Greenville, S.C.
Saturday - Jan. 22, 2011
Head Coach John Shulman
On the game:
"We are in a funk. It is called being on the road playing two of the best teams in the league, that helps that situation. The fifth game in 10 days also helps that situation. We are a tired, mentally and physically fatigued basketball team at this moment. How do you improve that? You get on the bus and get back home to Chattanooga. We are doing something kind of uncommon this week. We are going to take Sunday and Monday off. Five games in 10 days with a lot of emotional swings, we are tired. You can say what you want to say, but we are exhausted mentally and physically. We need some time off. That is the nice thing about building a little bit of a cushion being 7-0. I don't think that you are going to go through the season undefeated. It has been rare that it happens. You are going to have some bumps. We have prepared and talked about this bump. Before this week started, I knew how good Furman, Charleston and Wofford are. I said that if you could give me one of the three, then I would be happy. We got one of the three. I can't say that I am happy, but this swing was a very difficult this year."
On what needs to change:
"I asked the team in the locker room before the game, 'How did we get to be 6-0?' I know how we got to be 7-0 because we shot unbelievably against Charleston. We got be 6-0 by guarding and rebounding. We did not care who scored. All of the sudden, we are rock stars and we aint rock stars, that is not who we are. We are just simple old Chattanooga basketball that needs to get back down to basics. Doing what we are supposed to do. Failure and adversity is very difficult to handle. Success is very difficult to handle and we were tired."
On not hitting from three:
"I thought that we had some really good looks today. If those aren't going in, then why aren't they going in. Are the right people shooting them? Well, the player of the week in the Southern Conference shot 10 of them and went 0-for-10. Why did we struggle shooting the ball? Would fatigue have something to do with it, maybe. Is that an excuse, maybe, but it is also realistic. I am disappointed. I think this is a big point in our season. It is the first time that we have to handle this type of adversity. I am not going to lie to you. Furman and Wofford are very good. Could we have lost differently? Yes. Are we in a little bit of a funk? Yes, but we can definitely get out of it. I am disappointed, but I have not hit the panic button."
On working on the defense:
"We have to go back to work defensively and find out where on earth do you not mind getting beat. If you don't mind getting beat by the three, then shutoff the whole inside. If you don't mind getting beat from the inside, then shutoff everything from the outside. Right now, we are kind of at a loss. We are at a loss because all of the sudden we got Wofford and Furman, who have really good inside and outside presence and are a good basketball team. There are worst things in the world then losing to two of the top teams in the south."
Senior DeAntre Jefferson
On the road trip:
"This road trip was a tough one. These are the top three teams in the conference, so we knew it was going to be tough. We thought we could take one of them. If we got through that, then we could have separated ourselves from the rest of the schools. "
On what needs to be improved:
We played bad defense today. Our field goal defense struggled and we did not rebound well. We did not attack the rim on offense that well. We took too many contested shots, and took too many threes. We had too much one-on-one today. We needed to swing the ball more as well."
On the way Furman played:
"Defensively, we could not stop Saaka inside or outside. He had 30 on us. We tried to press. It started to work, but they buried some threes and put us away. Saaka killed us. Furman played a great game. We did not come out with the same energy as they did. Give Furman credit. Now, we have three at home and we need to start it out versus College of Charleston."
