CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Ricky Taylor (Brownsville, Tenn.) came off the bench to score 17 points leading the Chattanooga Mocs (1-3) to an 88-56 win over Warren Wilson (3-5) in McKenzie Arena. Taylor was one of four UTC players in double digits.
The story of the night was redshirt sophomore Drew Baker (Knoxville, Tenn.). The former manager, who walked on as a freshman in 2009-10, made his first collegiate start. He scored 14 points making all five shots from the field to go with five rebounds and two steals.
A 19-0 run broke open a 7-4 game early capped by a Dontay Hampton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) layup on a nice feed from Keegan Bell (Huntsville, Tenn.) to give the Mocs a 26-4 advantage at 9:02 of first half. UTC kept the pressure on to take a 45-18 lead into intermission.
The Owls never got closer than 26 in the second frame. Baker's layup at 3:03 gave Chattanooga its largest lead of 53, 86-33, before finishing with the 88-36 victory.
The 36 points allowed is the lowest of the John Shulman era. It's the lowest amount since USC Aiken scored 35 on Nov. 25, 1989 in a 77-35 Mocs win.
USCA is quite notable on this evening. UTC's 21 steals is a new school record topping the 18 against the Pacers on Nov. 23, 1996, a 110-61 Chattanooga victory.
Rashad Ali had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Warren Wilson. He was the lone bright spot as the Owls managed to shoot just 26 percent (13-50) from the field and 14.3 percent (3-21) from three-point range while turning the ball over 29 times. The Mocs scored 33 points off those miscues.
Hampton added 11 points and seven steals in 17 minutes for Chattanooga. Omar Wattad (Johnson City, Tenn.) added 10 points as well, while Bell and Ronrico White (Knoxville, Tenn.) each chipped in seven assists.
