CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Junior Dontay Hampton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Chattanooga Mocs (3-7) to a 98-48 win over Spalding (1-7) Tuesday night at McKenzie Arena. Hampton was one of seven UTC student-athletes to reach double figures in the win.
The contest brought home a Mocs legend in former player and assistant coach Kevin Gray. Gray played four seasons, 1973-76, helping lead the 1976 squad to the NCAA Division II National Championship game. He assisted Ron Shumate and Murray Arnold for eight years starting in 1976 and ending after the 1984 season.
Tonight's contest was all Mocs from the start. A 17-2 run over the first six-plus minutes set the tone as Keegan Bell (Huntsville, Ala.) and Drazen Zlovaric (Novi Sad, Serbia) combined for 12 of the 17 points to vault UTC out in front.
A three-pointer by Brandon Gabriel got the Golden Eagles within 11, 20-9, with 11:00 minutes left in the half. UTC reeled off an 18-3 run as an Omar Wattad (Johnson City, Tenn.) made It 38-12 at 3:43.
The second half was no different. The Mocs took their biggest lead of 54 points (84-30) on two Lance Stokes (Orlando, Fla.) free throws with 7:57 left in the game. They cruised to the 98-48 win from there.
Hampton was joined in double figures by Zlovaric with 14, Ricky Taylor (Brownsville, Tenn.) with 13, Bell and Wattad with 12 apiece and Ronrico White (Knoxville, Tenn.) who had 11. Bell ended up with eight assists. He is now just two shy of the school record of 414 held by Tim Brooks (1992-93) and Wes Moore (1996-99).
