Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Quotes
Utah Valley at Chattanooga
Dr Pepper Classic Championship Game
The McKenzie Arena - Chattanooga, Tenn.
Friday - Dec. 30, 2011
Chattanooga Head Coach John Shulman
Thoughts on the Dr. Pepper Classic
"There's not many of these around. Thanks to Coke and Gary Davis of Coke for helping UTC put this on. To have two home games right now is incredible. To hopefully use this and springboard on, we could not do this without Gary Davis and Coke. We do say thank you to them and what they do for the city. Not just for us, but what they do for the city is amazing."
Thoughts on the win over Utah Valley
"We just beat a good basketball team. At half, I was very concerned because we should have been up by 15 points. It's really good for our basketball team to grind out a win, and tonight we grinded out a very good win out of a very good basketball team that is very difficult to score against. We can build, grow and get better, and we have a long ways to go to get better. We're having success and the kids are having fun. I thought we played really good offensively, and in the second half we just did a really poor job on the glass. But we can correct that, and that's what we're going to keep on working on. It's a never ending process."
On the physicality of Utah Valley
"They're tough and they're physical. They're big and they have good size. They're so well coached. That guy can coach. Read his bio. He's really good, and they don't make mistakes defensively. We only had one day to prepare for all of that stuff. That was like a league game. That seemed like a conference game. They got beat by eight at Arkansas and they got beat by six at Oakland, but they're a good basketball team. I challenged our guys to come out like a confident basketball team, and we did come out like a confident basketball team. I just didn't count on Holton Hunsaker making every shot. I was really proud of our kids. To be where we are now after where we've been, I am really proud of them."
Keegan Bell, Senior, Guard
On winning the Dr. Pepper Classic, MVP award
"The trophy is what it's all about. We wanted to come and win the Dr. Pepper Classic, especially after last year when we came up short. We really needed this and we came back. I feel that we've come back from Christmas in a better mode, which was what we needed and what I wanted. I just felt like we played Chattanooga basketball. Felt like there was a flow out there and we were connecting like we were last night. I thought we connected really well and that's the most important thing. It was important we got the win. I am very appreciative of the MVP honor, but I couldn't do it without my guys knocking down shots and helping me out."
On the team finding a groove
"I felt like we started getting back into the flow and rhythm last night and then tonight it was more like a league game. Coach Shulman said that was how it was going to be and it was going to be completely different. Longwood was a very talented and skilled team, but this team was very tough. They had skilled players, but it was very tough. So when you can go against tough guys on the rebounding effort, which we didn't do as well a job in the second half as we did the first half, it is good that they were so physical because it helps us not feel too fat and happy."
Omar Wattad, Senior, Forward
Thoughts on finding his shot
"It felt good to hit shots. I am confident in my shot and knew it was going to be just a matter of time before they started falling. Keegan and the other guys found me and it was a good team victory. It was fun out there."
On feeling pressure to hit shots
"I don't feel a lot of pressure as far as what I have to do offensively. I feel like we have a bunch of talented guys out here, and whether or not I'm hitting shots is irrelevant. We all have to come together defensively and on the glass. It doesn't make a difference if I'm hitting, Keegan is hitting or Ricky Taylor is hitting, we have a lot of talent out there and I thing we all believe in each other. We will be fine as long as we play good on defense."
