SPARTANBURG, S.C. - In a rain shortened weekend against Appalachian
State, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior third baseman Tiffany
Baker (East Ridge, Tenn.) put up some impressive numbers in the doubleheader and was
named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for March 28. Baker registered
a grand slam and a two-run homer in the opening game and followed it up with a
RBI single during the Lady Mocs' 13-run first inning to start game two.
“I was just looking for something low because she was a drop
ball pitcher” said Baker on her grand slam at bat with the full video interview avaliable at the top of the page. "The pitch just happened to be outside and I turned on it."
This is the fourth weekly award for Chattanooga and the third
different player - sophomore first baseman Kasey Tydingco (Feb. 21), senior pitcher
and designated player Michelle Fuzzard (Feb. 28) and Baker - to be honored this season. Fuzzard was also
named pitcher of the week on Feb. 14 to open the season.
The multi-home run game was the second of the East Ridge,
Tenn., native's career. She also hit two last season against Butler on Feb. 19,
2010. Baker is the Lady Mocs all-time home run leader with 41 and now has nine
on the season.
“Tiffany has had some ups and downs this year, but she has been more patient at the plate,” said head coach Frank Reed on Baker's
grand slam. “It definitely showed today as she worked the count on both home
runs.”
During the doubleheader, the third baseman drove in seven
runs and slugged 1.800, while compiling a .667 on-base pct. The six RBI game tied
a conference single-game high that had been accomplished this year by Fuzzard
(Chattanooga vs. Colorado St.) Marie Fogle (Georgia Southern vs. Western
Carolina) and Morgan Wright (Elon vs. Morgan State).
Baker has now been named the player of the week by the conference
office twice in her four-year career with the first occurring on Feb. 22, 2010.
The Lady Mocs are back in action on Wednesday as they play a
doubleheader against Georgia State at Frost Stadium. A live video broadcast and
stats are available on the softball schedule page with first pitch set for 4
p.m.
