Jaeger Wins, Mocs 2nd at Golfweek Conference Challenge

BURLINGTON, Iowa --- Chattanooga Mocs senior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) claimed his second collegiate title in exciting fashion winning the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Spirit Hollow Golf Course. Jaeger's win paced Chattanooga to a second-place finish behind hard-charging Arkansas.
Jaeger entered the final round at eight-under par with a one-stroke lead over Sean Einhaus (Oklahoma State and two shots over Josh Eure (Arkansas). The trio played their final rounds together. While Einhaus struggled with a 78, Jaeger and Eure dueled their way around the 7,010-yard tract.
Eure got within a shot of Jaeger's lead after the latter's bogey on the par three seventh. His bogey on 10 followed by back-to back birdies on 10 and 11 for the Mocs standout had Jaeger up by four with seven holes remaining.
Jaeger bogeyed 12 and 16 around a double bogey on 15 to knot the duo at six under. Matching pars on 17 pushed the match-up to the brink.
Jaeger's drove his ball in the hazard opening the door for Eure. Jaeger decided to play out of the hazard from a difficult lie and "chopped" it to 190 yards from the hole on the par five. He laced a five iron to 30 feet, while Eure had around 12 feet with a difficult downhill putt ahead.
It was Jaeger's day. He drained his putt from 30 feet, and then watched as Eure missed his for the win.
Jaeger's seven-under par total of 209 is the same he won with at the LSU National Invitational last spring. He fired rounds of 67, 69 and 73.
The Mocs as a team shot 296 today to end up second at two-over par 866. They finished second to Arkansas at 859 (-5). The Razorbacks put together the round of the day at 285 (-3), seven shots less than any other team on a windy, cool day.
Perennial power Oklahoma State was third, one shot behind Chattanooga at 867 (+3). New Mexico was fourth at 875 (+11), while Cal came in fifth at 878 (+14).
Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) just missed his second top 10 in as many events tying for 11th with a one-over par 217. He was plus three but birdies at 16 and 17 helped UTC cement its second-place finish. He shot 75, 69 and 73 over the three days.
Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) tied for 31st at 223 (+7), while Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) was a stroke back tied for 37th at 224 (+8). Both birdied 18 as the counting cards played the final three holes today at minus four. Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) tied for 46th at 227 (+11).
The Mocs have a quick turnaround leaving Saturday for the Rees Jones Invitational on Daufuskie Island, S.C., in the Hilton Head area. The event, hosted by the University of South Carolina, is a two-day, 54-hole event on Monday and Tuesday, October 3-4. Click the links above for notes, quotes and final results.
