CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team
continued its fall season on Friday at Frost Stadium securing two victories against Roane State
by a score of 17-0 following five innings in game one and a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
Junior first baseman Kasey Tydingco (Fairfield, Calif.) paced the Lady Mocs
with a 5-for-6 performance, while adding five RBI and a double.
"Today was more like a game situation, then last week [against
Tennessee Wesleyan]" said head coach Frank Reed. "I was extremely proud to see
some of the younger players step up because we became a team today. We were
trying to get the older and younger student-athletes to mesh together and tonight
was a great experience for them."
Senior pitcher Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington Beach, Fla.)
picked up the victory for Chattanooga in game one tossing four innings and
fanning four before freshman Brittany Perez (Miami, Fla.) pitched the fifth. A
complete-game shutout was thrown by freshman Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.)
notching 11 strikeouts in the second game.
"Taylor is going to be a great player for us," said Reed. "She
has all of the pitches and a great presence in the circle. If she doesn't throw
one well, then she is coming back even harder with that same pitch."
The first inning for the Lady Mocs was the most impressive as
the squad sent 16 players to the plate in scoring 12 runs on eight hits. Junior
second baseman Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) and sophomore outfielder Kaiti
Dutton (Tulsa, Okla.) started it off with back-to-back singles.
Fuzzard drove a double to right center scoring one and
following a mistake by Roane State, Tydingco doubled into the left center gap
to put Chattanooga up, 4-0.
After tacking on three more runs on errors by Roane State,
sophomore outfielder Layne Rainey (Clarksville, Tenn.) connected on a single
through the left side up put two runners in scoring position. Poteat plated the
eighth run of the frame by drawing a walk before Dutton went the opposite field
on a double to left center. An RBI single by Fuzzard, a sacrifice fly by junior
designated player Vivian Morimoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and an RBI single by
Tydingco completed the frame for Chattanooga.
In the second inning, Rainey drove in sophomore catcher
Natalie Powers (Glenpool, Okla.) on a single down the right field line to put
the Lady Mocs up 13-0.
Chattanooga began a two-out rally in the third as Tydingco
singled down the right field line and junior shortstop Jessica Traxler (Chino
Hills, Calif.) was hit by a pitch. Freshman third baseman Sarah Beth Roberts
(Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) reached on an error and Powers drew a bases loaded walk
before sophomore outfielder Stephanie Rieck (Chandler, Ariz.) connected on a
two-RBI single to left center, 15-0.
After Fuzzard fanned two opposing hitters in the fourth, the
Lady Mocs added two more runs in extending their lead to 17-0.
Tossing the fifth was Perez, who gave up a single and
recorded a strikeout to complete the contest.
To start game two, Deason stuck out the side in the top-half
and two mistakes by Roane State setup Chattanooga with runners in scoring
position in the bottom of the first. Morimoto, who went 3-for-3 in the contest, doubled to right center
scoring one and Tydingco notched a single providing the Lady Mocs with a 2-0
lead.
The Clarksville, Tenn., native added strikeouts in the
second, third and fourth before once again retiring the side via strikeouts in
the fifth. The Lady Mocs continued to hit the ball hard, but the Roane State
defense was there to make the play.
In the bottom of the sixth, Dutton reached with a one-out
single, then Fuzzard deposited a single through the right side. A single to
right by Morimoto put Chattanooga up 3-0. Tydingco delivered a two-RBI single
up the middle to extend the advantage to 5-0.
Deason completed the contest with two more strikeouts with
the final one totaling 11 on the night.
Chattanooga resumes its fall schedule on Oct. 8-9 with the
RBI Fall Classic, a 10-team tournament played at Frost Stadium and adjacent
Warner Park. Calhoun, Chattanooga State, Georgia, Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee
state, Milligan, Motlow State, Shorter and Tennessee Tech are welcomed to the
Scenic City. The Lady Mocs battle Georgia on Oct. 8 at 5:45 p.m. and host
Shorter and Chattanooga State the following day in a doubleheader set for 4
p.m.
