CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team
completed the series sweep of College of Charleston (10-11, 0-3 SoCon) with an
11-2 five-inning victory on Sunday at Frost Stadium. Senior pitcher Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington Beach, Calif.) notched a two-RBI single in the fourth, bringing
her career total to 178 and passing Melissa Ramirez (2002-05) on the Chattanooga
(14-8, 3-0 SoCon) all-time list.
In the circle, the Huntington Beach, Calf., native tossed a
four-hit complete game to improve to 5-5 on the year, while registering two
strikeouts.
Chattanooga totaled 11 hits in the contest as senior catcher
Vivian Morimoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil), junior first baseman Kasey Tydingco
(Fairfield, Calif.), junior second baseman Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) and
freshman outfielder Nicole Osterman (Kissimmee, Fla.) each tallied two hits.
The home run power was provided by Tydingco with a three-run
shot and solo blasts from Morimoto and Osterman.
Starting off in the first inning, the Cougars took an early
lead on a solo home run by Kelsey Hodson, which was an unearned run as during
the at bat the Lady Mocs defense dropped a fly ball in foul territory.
The Lady Mocs responded in a big way during the second as
Tydingco began the frame with a triple to left. Morimoto reached on an error,
which eventually allowed Tydingco to score and tie the contest. A two-run shot
by Traxler put Chattanooga on top, 3-1, before Osterman connected on a solo homer to left.
In the next inning, Morimoto stepped to the plate and hit a
blast down the right field line that cleared the bleachers for the second time
this season. It was her team and conference leading seventh of the year.
College of Charleston put a runner on in the fourth on a
fielding error, but a double play ball sent to second baseman Poteat and turned
by shortstop Traxler, erased the runner.
During the fourth, Chattanooga once again flexed its
offensive muscle scoring six times on six hits. Freshman third baseman Sarah Beth Roberts (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) started
it off by reaching on a fielding error. Singling to left center was Osterman
before sophomore outfielder Layne Rainey (Clarksville, Tenn.) registered an
infield single.
With the bases loaded, Poteat sent a hard hit ball up the
middle scoring Roberts, 6-1. Following a fielder's choice, Fuzzard stepped up
and delivered a single over the head of the right fielder as two runs came in
to score, setting a new program record with 178 RBI.
The next batter was Tydingco, who cleared the bases with a
homer just to the right of center to increase the advantage to 11-1. It was the
sixth round tripper of the year for the Fairfied, Calif., native.
Prior to the fifth inning, Fuzzard was recognized for achieveing a new Lady Mocs record with the crowd of 226 at Frost Stadium providing a standing ovation.
A leadoff walk drawn by the Cougars appeared to provide some
momentum, but the next batter lined into a double play caught by third baseman
Roberts and tossed to Tydingco at first. Carly Corthell then connected on her first
home run of the season.
Taking the loss for College of Charleston was Stephanie
Saylors (5-6), who went two innings, yielding three earned runs, before Jen
Rosene came on to complete the contest. The four hits by the Cougars were
recorded by Amanda Londergan, Mackenzie Maples, Hodgson and Corthell.
