CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team
went 3-3 on its spring break trip to the Sunshine State as the March 19 edition
of Extra Innings with Frank Reed looks back at the action. The Voice of Lady
Mocs Softball, Tyler Brown, hosts the show with Reed that additionally previews
the coming Southern Conference series at Appalachian State.
In the last week, the Lady Mocs made their way around
Florida with stops in Tallahassee, Gainesville and Clearwater as the team
notched victories over Canisius, Hartford and Northwestern.
The slate began at Florida State, where freshman pitcher Taylor
Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) was the story in holding the No. 21/22 Seminoles to
one run over seven innings with five strikeouts. Chattanooga's upset bid fell
short as a well-hit ball off the bat of senior catcher Vivian Morimoto (Sao
Paulo, Brazil) was just a couple of feet from a go-ahead home run.
As coach Reed stated, the stop at No. 4 Florida may be one
of the strangest games he coached in his 22 years behind the collegiate bench.
The game was eventually called a "No Game" after a long rain delay in the
bottom of the fourth.
Chattanooga had an off-day on Thursday, where the team had
the opportunity to enjoy Clearwater Beach for the afternoon before preparing
for five games at the USF Invite.
On Friday, the Lady Mocs posted a five-inning 8-0 win over
Canisius to open the weekend as Deason tossed a complete-game shutout with
seven strikeouts. Chattanooga used a five-run fourth to put the home team on
top.
In game two, senior pitcher Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington
Beach, Calif.) went the distance with five strikeouts. The Lady Mocs continued to
hit the ball well as sophomore second baseman Sara Poteat (Thomaston , Ga.)
notched a triple, while Morimoto connected on a home run in the 11-1 rout.
The second-day of the event opened against Northwestern as
Chattanooga scored at least one run in the fourth thru sixth innings in
building a 6-1 lead. Deason and the Lady Mocs had to hold on in the bottom of the
seventh before shutting the door on the Wildcats after they loaded the bases in
the 6-2 victory.
A contest against UMass ended the day as Chattanooga jumped
on the opposition with three runs in the first, but the Minutemen would come
back twice to tie the contest at six at 11 before winning via a walk-off in the
bottom of the seventh.
Illinois was the final game of the weekend for the Lady Mocs
as the squad just registered two hits. The Fighting Illini notched a pair of
runs in the sixth and seventh innings in the 4-0 win.
For her work over the week, Deason was named the SoCon
Pitcher of the Week for posting a 2-2 mark and 2.36 ERA. The Clarksville,
Tenn., native registered four complete games including one shutout with 19
strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched.
The duo, then, look towards the Lady Mocs next SoCon series
at Appalachian State, the site of the Southern Conference Tournament on May
9-12, this weekend. Associate Head Coach Amy Herrington-Woodard will be making
her first trip to Boone, N.C., after leaving as the programs head coach in
2011.
This week's question of the week, once again, had a tie to
the upcoming matchup against the Mountaineers and fans can send questions for
the five-time SoCon Coach of the Year by sending an e-mail to Nate-Blythe@mocs.utcu.edu with your
name and question.
Be sure to listen to Brown call all the action at Appalachian
State with free audio and live stats available
