WP: Ashley Rainey (6-1) LP: Michelle Fuzzard (3-5)
OXFORD, Miss. - The Chattanooga softball team fell in the
championship game at the Ole Miss Red and Blue Classic in Oxford, Miss., to Troy,
6-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Mocs were unable to avenge a 9-8 loss in
eight innings to the Trojans from Saturday, where Chattanooga scored the first
eight runs.
Seniors pitcher Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington Beach, Calif.),
catcher Vivian Morimoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and shortstop Jessica Traxler
(Chino Hills, Calif.) each tallied a hit during the contest.
Earning the start in the circle was Fuzzard, who struck out
three in four innings of work before freshman Taylor Deason (Clarksville,
Tenn.) came in and finished the contest.
The Lady Mocs fell behind early, 2-0, in the first to Troy
as the Chattanooga defense committed three errors in the opening frame.
In the second, back-to-back one-out singles by Morimoto and
Traxler seemed to start the Lady Mocs offense, but the team was unable to cut
into the Trojan lead.
Troy added two runs in the second as Sarah Harris doubled to
right center and Michelle Hewitt connected on a two-run homer to right, 4-0.
Tacking on insurance runs were the Trojans, who struck for
one run in the third and fourth inning, 6-0. Chattanooga stranded a runner in both those frames,
including one at third base in the fifth.
During the sixth, Fuzzard single up the middle with one out,
which was followed by a Tydingco single through the right side. Both runners would
be left on increasing the total for the game to six.
Troy was led by the fantastic pitching of Ashley Rainey, who
threw a complete-game four hitter and struck out two. The offense was fueled by
the three-RBI performance by Hewitt and mulit-hit game from Jaycee Affelt.
The Lady Mocs host their first mid-week game of the season
on Wednesday when SIU-Edwardsville is welcomed to Frost Stadium for a single
contest at 4:30 p.m. Fans can follow the action with live stats or subscription-based
video through MocsVision with audio commentary from the Voice of Lady Mocs
Softball, Tyler Brown.
