STATESBORO, Ga. - The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team
tallied two runs in the seventh inning, but it was not enough to upend Georgia
Southern in a 6-2 loss on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field. Senior shortstop
Jessica Traxler (Chino Hills, Calif.) notched a two-run double, while senior
pitcher Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and junior first baseman
Kasey Tydingco (Fairfield, Calif.) also registered doubles.
Chattanooga falls to 19-13 overall and 5-2 in the Southern
Conference, while Georgia Southern improves to 22-12 and 8-1 in the league
along with the series win over the Lady Mocs.
Taking the loss in the circle was freshman pitcher Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) tossing three innings before Fuzzard cam in relief
to complete the contest. Both pitchers combined for two strikeouts.
The Eagles hurler Sarah Purvis was able to quite the Lady
Mocs offense in the complete-game win to improve to 12-6, while recording seven
strikeouts.
Each of the first three innings were quick as the teams went
down in order. The first hit of the afternoon came from Fuzzard, who doubled
off the fence in left as the outfielder ended up out of position.
A leadoff single by Hannah Ennis and walk to Marie Fogle set
up Georgia Southern in the bottom-half before MacKenzie Williams blasted her
third home run of the series to take the lead, 3-0. The round tripper chased
Deason allowing Fuzzard to enter the circle to retire the side.
In the fifth, Roberts notched a two-out double into the gap
in right center, but would be stranded.
Georgia Southern extended its lead in the fifth by scoring
three runs on four hits to up the advantage to 6-0, capped by a Fogle home run.
Pacing the Eagle offense was Williams with a two-hit
performance and three-RBI, while six batters in the lineup notched base hits.
After seeing Purvis in the 14th inning of the weekend,
Chattanooga was able to put two runs up on the scoreboard. Fuzzard started off
by being hit by a pitch before Tydingco doubled to right center. Both runners
crossed the plate on a Traxler double to right center before Georgia Southern
was able to end the contest.
Following three-long weeks on the road, the Lady Mocs open a
10-game homestand at Frost Stadium on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against Marshall.
