CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga Mocs rising senior
Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and incoming freshman Kory Webb (Knoxville,
Tenn.) are in Utah for the United States Amateur Public Links. The tourney is
July 9-14 at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah.
Both Mocs golfers won their qualifiers to advance to this
prestigious event. Fox shot 68 and 66 over 36 holes for a 10-under par 134 at
Harpeth Hills Golf Course in Nashville. Webb was one of three to shoot 141 (-3)
at Furman Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. Webb opened with a 65.
The last UTC golfer to play in the Pub Links was on the
women's side last year. Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) reached the round of 32
at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort tying for third in qualifying for match play
against a world-class field.
The last Mocs men's golfer to play in the pub links was
Jonathan Hodge (2006-09) in 2008 at Murphy Creek Golf Club in Aurora, Colo.
Hodge did not advance to match play out of a 10-person-for-one-spot playoff at
the end of stroke play.
Fox tees off No. 10 at 2:10 p.m. (EDT) on Monday, July 9,
while Webb is off the tee 10 minutes later but on No. 1 at 2:20 p.m. The Gold
Course at Soldier Hollow is being set up at 7,670 yards playing par 71. It's
the longest course in U.S. Amateur Public Links history.
The USGA accepted 3,034 entries for this year's
championship. There are 156 who qualified for this week. The low 64 scores through
36 medal holes move on to match play. There are six rounds of head-to-head play
to decide this year's champion.
