The Southern Conference Champion Chattanooga Mocs football team tied a school record with nine individuals earning All-SoCon recognition, the league office announced today. UTC nearly swept the five awards given out by the nine head coaches, while three more earned SoCon All-Freshmen honors.
Sophomore quarterback Jacob Huesman was named the Offensive Player of the Year, junior defensive end Davis Tull repeated as the Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Russ Huesman took home Coach of the Year honors, according to the league's football coaches.
Jacob Huesman is the first offensive player in UTC history to win SoCon Player of the Year honors. He finished the season with 1,637 yards through the air, going 164-for-240 with 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also ran for 894 yards, scoring another nine touchdowns on the ground.
The Chattanooga, Tenn., native was the league's offensive player of the week on Nov. 4 after running for 132 yards and a touchdown and throwing for 127 yards and two more scores in a win over Appalachian State. Huesman had three games with more than 200 yards passing and three with more than 100 rushing, topping the century mark in both categories in back-to-back games in November.
Tull is the first Moc to repeat as SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and the first to win two in a career. He led the league in sacks for the second straight season, posting 9.0 in 2013. He is league's first repeat defensive player of the year since Appalachian State's Dexter Coakley took the award three straight times from 1994-96.
Tull posted 52 tackles on the season (37 solo), with 15.0 going for lost yardage. The Knoxville, Tenn., native had a league-best four forced fumbles with one recovery and led the Mocs with eight quarterback hurries.
Tull was the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 14 after forcing two fumbles and recording 3.5 sacks in a win over Furman. He is a finalist for the Buchanan Award, given annually to the top defensive player in FCS.
Coach Huesman led Chattanooga to its first SoCon title since 1984 and just its fifth in school history. The Mocs were nationally ranked for several weeks of the season, finishing the year in the top 25 in both the FCS Coaches Poll (23) and The Sports Network Poll (21).
Coach Huesman directed Chattanooga to an overall record of 8-4, with a 6-2 mark in SoCon play. The Mocs finished their season as the top defensive squad in the SoCon, leading the league in scoring defense (20.4) and total defense (328.9).
One of just two Chattanooga coaches to ever be named coach of the year by his peers (Buddy Nix, 1990), Huesman is taking the honor for the second time. Joe Morrison is the only other UTC coach to win multiple SoCon Coach of the Year honors (1977 & 1979).
The Mocs led the league with seven individuals earning first team recognition. Senior offensive lineman Kevin Revis and junior tight end Faysal Shafaat joined Huesman on offense. Senior defensive backs Kadeem Wise and D.J. Key, along with senior linebacker Wes Dothard, joined Tull on the first team defense.
This is the first honor for Revis, while Shafaat repeats as a first team selection. Revis guided the Mocs to 2,549 rushing yards, the fourth highest mark on record at UTC and the most since 1979. Shafaat repeated on the first team after leading the Mocs with 35 catches for 322 yards and six touchdowns.
Wise becomes UTC's first four-time All-SoCon pick with today's announcement. He caps off an outstanding career with eight passes defended on the season. Key also repeats on the first team. His 293 career tackles are ninth all-time at UTC.
Dothard is the first Moc since Jacob Burney (1978-80) to earn first-team recognition for three consecutive years. He led the team with 82 tackles, while his 296 career stops are eighth on UTC's all-time list.
Sophomore Josh Freeman was a second team pick by both the league's media and coaches. He finished with 41 tackles, including 7.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks. Senior Chaz Moore was a second-team return specialist. He was 11th in the nation with a 29.1 average on kickoff returns.
Offensive lineman Corey Levin, running back Derrick Craine and defensive end Kionta Davis all made the SoCon All-Freshman team, giving the Mocs 12 honorees overall.
