The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team clinched its second 3-2 come from behind win in a row at Western Carolina to make UTC the 2015-16 regular season Southern Conference Champions. Chattanooga improved to 24-5 and 13-3 in the league.
"This team will be remembered," head coach
Travis Filar stated. "They made a huge mark in the history of our program. Each and every one of our players will remember this season and how we set out on a goal and achieved it."
This is the first time since 1998 the Mocs have won the regular season title and the first time the program has reached 24 wins in regular season play.
"I don't think it's the way anyone would imagine how we would win it," stated Filar. "Credit to Western Carolina for coming out and being aggressive."
Saturday was a similar story to Friday's match, where UTC dropped the first two sets. However, UTC fought back with convincing 25-14 and 25-17 wins in the third and fourth.
Chattanooga drastically improved its attack percentage from .156 in the second to .415 in the third.
The fifth set featured five ties in score. After going down 8-7, the Mocs won four points in a row and held the lead for the rest of the contest. Senior
Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) capped off the match with her 17th kill of the match at 15-11.
"We found a way to win," Filar shared. "We have a toughness that you can't measure. It's amazing to be a part of it. They can come back from anything."
Reid posted her 11th double-double of the year with a personal season-best of 29 digs.
Junior
Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) collected 26 kills for the second match in a row paired with 15 digs, marking her third double-double of the season. Junior
Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) recorded 16 kills and a team-best .333 hitting percentage.
Senior
Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) tallied 35 digs, 23 of which came in the first two sets, while freshman
Rachel Petkosh (Merritt Island, Fla.) followed with 17.
Sophomore
Madison Bergren (Muncie, Ind.) posted her first double-double as a Moc with 42 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore
Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) made 27 assists. Both setters helped UTC to a .216 hitting percentage.
The Mocs return to Cullowhee, N.C., Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2:30 p.m. as the No. 1 seeds for the Southern Conference Tournament. UTC plays the winner between Western Carolina and The Citadel.
