CHATTANOOGA---Four double digit scorers led the Chattanooga Mocs (10-2) to a 77-75 win over visiting Radford (7-6) Tuesday afternoon. While the Mocs led for a majority of the game, they were never able to fully shake loose from the Highlanders.
Â
"They have a lot of veterans that can hurt you in a bunch of different ways and that was a gutsy win by our guys, because they are a terrific team," coach
Matt McCall said. "You don't go into Georgetown and beat them, arguably one of the best teams in the country, and not be a good team. I would not be shocked if they are in the NCAA Tournament come March. That was a good win.
Â
"I really felt like defensively we did a great job. We still got stops when we needed them and when we needed to get loose balls. It was a great win by our team."
Â
Johnathan Burroughs-Cook led the way with 17 points.
Chuck Ester added a career-high 13, while
Greg Pryor and
Eric Robertson chipped in 12 and 11, respectively.
Justin Tuoyo grabbed nine rebounds.
Â
Rashun Davis had a game-high 24 points for the Highlanders. Caleb Tanner fired in 13 making 4-5 from 3pt range, while Brandon Holcomb contributed 10 points and nine boards.
Â
Chattanooga led by as many as 10 in the first half before settling for a 41-33 halftime advantage. Radford chipped away, coming within a basket of the lead several times before Davis' jumper in the lane tied the score at 61-all with 6:55 to play.
Â
Ester answered with a layup 19 seconds later before a defensive stop and
Duke Ethridge three from the left wing got it back to five, 66-61, at 5:45. It was a three-point game almost five minutes later.
Â
Robertson found Tuoyo driving to the basket for a layup and one with 1:02 to go. Tuoyo made the free throw for a 73-67 Mocs lead. Radford made layups while the Mocs were 3-6 from the free throw line. It was a four-point margin when Tuoyo made his fourth block of the game.
Â
Davis, as he had the previous two possessions, jetted up the floor and into the lane. Tuoyo swatted the effort into the stands with just under 14 seconds remaining. Strong defense on a Cameron Jones 3pt attempt led to a rebound by Ester.
Â
He stepped to the line with 3.7 ticks on the clock and made one of two. Davis hit a 3pt from halfcourt at the buzzer for the 77-75 final.
Â
"We just tried to keep everything in (perspective)," Burroughs-Cook added. "When stuff's not going right, we always try to keep our heads up and keep playing, because we know basketball's all about runs. So they get their run, we're going to get our run, and we got the last run so that's how the game ended."
Â
The 10-2 start is the best since 1993-94 (11-2). It also ties the best start by a Mocs head coach for
Matt McCall. Ron Shumate also opened 10-2 in 1972-73.
Â
The Highlanders led by as many as seven in the first half, 26-19, with 6:20 until the break. Sparked by Burroughs-Cook, the Mocs went on a 14-2 run to flip the score. Burroughs-Cook scored seven in the spurt capping it with a corner three for a 33-28 lead.
Â
UTC closed the final six-plus minutes of the half 22-7 for the 41-33 lead at intermission.
Â
The team is off for Holiday break until Dec. 29. They travel to Lipscomb that day for a 7:30 p.m. (EST) tipoff on ESPN3.com.
