The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team mounted a big comeback but came up just shy of a win over Wofford to open Southern Conference play for both teams at the Champions Club today.  The Mocs fell to the Terriers 4-3.

After dropping the opening doubles point, Chattanooga quickly found itself in a 3-0 hole following losses at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.  Junior Luke Saunders got UTC on the board with his (6-3, 6-2) win at No. 4 over Walker Heffron. 

Sophomore Nic Wilson kept the momentum going with a (7-5, 6-3) win at No. 5 against Parks Schoen, while sophomore Lucas Plesky tied the match with his win at No. 3 over Parks Thompson. 

That left junior John Peacey's No. 6 match against David Sklar as the decider.  As expected, the action was pushed to three sets after Plesky won the second frame 6-2.  The final set went to a tiebreaker with Sklar winning 7-1. 

“It was a great battle and I give credit to Wofford because they stepped up and played well under pressure,” stated UTC head coach Carlos Garcia.  “I'm proud of how we fought back after falling behind 3-0.

“Even though we lost a tight doubles point and lost quickly at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, the bottom half of the lineup played really well and they gave our team a chance to win. It came down to the No. 6 match and the difference in winning and losing was just a few points. John competed very well and I am proud of his effort.”
