Mocs Down Mercer to Advance to SoCon Title Game

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- Finishing strong for the Chattanooga Mocs, Anyssa Robles hit a three-run, two-out walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-6 victory over Mercer on Thursday. 

The top-seeded Chattanooga (34-13) was led by Robles, J.J. Hamill, Sam Taylor and Nicole Osterman as they each registered two hits in the seven-inning match up. Robles went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, including the game winning run. Hamill followed close behind with two RBIs.

This was the third straight game Robles won with a walk-off hit for the Mocs.  Yesterday, she had a game-winning single in the 10th inning to defeat Western Carolina.  She also helped the Mocs clinch the regular season title with a two-RBI single in the eighth inning for a 4-3 win over Samford on Sunday. 

Defensively, the Mocs saw action from Taylor Deason and Cori Jennings. Deason fanned out six strikeouts for 6.1 innings pitched. Jennings closed out the game, coming in the top of the seventh. She faced four at bats and gave up zero walks. Taking the win, the freshman to improves to 14-6 for the season.

Chattanooga returns to Frost Stadium at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday for the tournament finale. The Mocs will take on the winner of game 11 of the tournament set for later today at 3 p.m. In that matchup, Mercer will square-off against the victor of the Western Carolina versus Furman game.

Chattanooga 7, Mercer 6

The Mocs were the first to score in the game as a run in the bottom of the first ended Mercer's Stevens scoreless innings streak for the tournament. Consecutive singles from Hamill, Sarah Beth Roberts and Nicole Osterman. With bases loaded, a line drive from Criket Blanco would cash in a run.

Chattanooga cushioned its lead with two runs in the bottom of the second frame. Sam Taylor reach first with a single up the middle while J.J. Hamill smoked a two-run homer to left center. The freshman's fifth homerun of the season set the score to 3-0.

Mercer tacked on two runs off of two hits in the top of the third, cutting Chattanooga's lead to 3-2.

Not shaken, the Mocs responded with a long shot from Criket Blanco down the left-field line in the bottom  putting the score 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth..

Mercer would go scoreless in the sixth inning but would come out in the top of the seventh, driving in four runs off of six hits. A two-run homerun form Riley Carter would tie the game at four. The Bears would take the lead for the first time in the game with a runs driven in off a passed ball and a single down the left-line from Caroline Taylor.

With the score 6-4 in Mercer's favor, the Mocs needed two runs to extend the game. A strikeout and a groundout to lead the bottom of the frame cut Chattanooga's chances immediately. However, upperclassmen Osterman, Blanco and Robles had other plans. Osterman led off the trio as she singled with a bunt. Blanco followed in with a walk while Robles answered the call with Chattanooga's third-straight walk-off winning hit with a slicing line drive over the right field fence. The Mocs took the game 7-6.
