2014-15 All Sports Year in Review

The 2014-15 athletics season was a banner year for the Chattanooga Mocs.  UTC won seven Southern Conference titles in four sports and four teams were represented in the postseason.  The Mocs finished 117th in the NACDA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, their second-best showing in school history. 

UTC had five All-Americans, six SoCon Players of the Year, two SoCon Tournament MVPs, seven individual SoCon Champs and one Academic All-American.  The Mocs also set school records with 50 student-athletes named All-SoCon and 96 on the Academic All-SoCon Team.

Men's Basketball (Will Wade, head coach)
     22-10, 15-3 SoCon/2nd

• 1st 20-win season since 2004-05. Most regular season triumphs (22) since 1993-94. The 20 regular season DI wins ties the school record (1987).

• Sophomore Justin Tuoyo became the second Moc to earn SoCon Defensive Player of the Year honors following Z. Mason in 2014.
• Tuoyo and senior Casey Jones made the All-SoCon team in the coaches vote. Jones (1st team), Tuoyo (2nd) and sophomore Greg Pryor (3rd) earned media mention. Jones and Tuoyo were named first team NABC All-District 22.
• Tuoyo set a new school record with 104 blocks during the season. He ranked fourth in the nation in blocks per game. His nine blocks in the home win over Western Carolina tied the SoCon record for a player in a league contest.
• Jones led the team in scoring (14.2) and rebounding (7.0). He became the first SoCon performer to win back-to-back Player of the Month awards in the same season since NBA MVP Stephen Curry at Davidson in 2008-09. • Senior Ronrico White became the 20th Moc of the DI era to eclipse 1,000 career points. His 1,000th-point came on a trey from the right corner directly in front of the Mocs bench during regulation of the overtime win at Furman. He ended his career with 1,100 points.
• Eric Robertson led the SoCon in 3pt percentage making 46.8 percent from beyond the arc. He was even better in the classroom posting a 4.0 GPA for the year earning Dean's List mention with Jones, Martynas Bareika, K.J. Bates, Tre' McLean and Ronrico White. Those six also made the Athletics Director's Honor Roll with Alex Bran.
• Matt McCall was introduced as the 19th head coach in school history on April 13, 2015. He came to the Scenic City from Florida where he worked with Billy Donovan the past four seasons as assistant coach.

Women's Basketball (Jim Foster, head coach)
     29-4, 14-0 SoCon/1st/Tournament Champions • NCAA 1st Round

• The Mocs claimed their third straight Southern Conference regular season title and 19th since 1984.

• Jim Foster was named SoCon Coach of the Year by both the coaches and media.  He was also named Coach of the Year by the Tennessee Sports Writer's Association (2nd straight and fourth in his career).
• Alicia Payne was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year.
• Sophomores Jasmine Joyner and Chelsey Shumpert were named All-Conference, while Kayla Freeman received the Ann Lashley Inspiration Award
• The Mocs ranked 17th in the AP Top 25 Poll and 18th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.  UTC was second in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 and second by ESPN's Graham Hays in his Mid-Major Top 10.
•  UTC led the nation in fewest personal fouls per game (11.1) and was second in the nation for scoring defense allowing opponents just 50.5 ppg
• The Mocs posted a 25-game win streak, tied for third longest in school history
• UTC defeated two Top 10 teams in the same year with wins over then-No. 4 Tennessee and then-No. 7 Stanford ... named NCAA Team of the Week after beating Stanford.
• Joyner broke a 26-year-old Southern Conference record for blocked shots with 132 in the regular season. She finished the season ranked fifth in the nation with 4.0 per game.
• Joyner was the first player in nearly 30 years to record 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game (26pts, 20rbs vs. Furman - 3/6/15)
• Freshman Keiana Gilbert was named the ESPNW National Player of the Week following the Mocs' win over Tennessee.
• Jasmine Joyner was named SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player.  She was joined on the All-SoCon Tournament team by Chelsey Shumpert (1st), Alicia Payne (2nd) and Ka'Vonne Towns (2nd).

Cross Country (Bill Gautier, head coach)
     Men (5th SoCon) • Women (2nd SoCon/12th NCAA Regional)

• Amanda Cotter and Rebecca Greenwall named All-Conference.

• Amanda Cotter named All-Region with 19th place finish at NCAA South Region.
• Patrick O'Brien and John Gilpin were both named Capital One Academic All-District.
• The men had a 3.72 GPA, second in the nation behind Vanderbilt (3.74) and named USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
• Patrick O'Brien received the Dayle May Award for UTC senior male with the highest GPA.
• The women posted a 3.71 GPA and were tied for seventh in the country and named USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
• Teghan Henderson named SoCon Runner of the Week/SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week.

Football (Russ Huesman, head coach) • 10-4, 7-0/1st SoCon
• Chattanooga won the outright SoCon title and participated in the FCS Playoffs for the first time since 1984.  UTC advance to the quarterfinals for the first time. 

• 10 wins are the most in school history.
• UTC finished the year No. 8 in the FCS Coaches Poll and The Sports Network Top-25 ... highest final national ranking in school history.
• Senior Davis Tull won his third SoCon Defensive Player of the Year honor.  He set the SoCon all-time sack record (37.0) during the season.  He was 12th in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award.
• Junior QB Jacob Huesman was named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Year for the second time.  He was 11th in the voting for the Walter Payton Award. 
• Tull, Huesman, Corey Levin, Faysal Shafaat and Tommy Hudson (PR) gave the Mocs a school-record five All-American Awards.
• Tull repeated as a Capital One Academic All-American.
• Head Coach Russ Huesman was named the SoCon Coach of the Year.  He is the first at UTC to win the honor three times.  He was 10th in the voting for the Eddie Robinson Award.
• UTC set a school record with 17 Mocs on the All-SoCon team.

Men's Golf (Mark Guhne, head coach) • 3rd SoCon
• Andrew Weathers was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. He joins former Mocs Derek Rende (2007) and Stephan Jaeger (2009) in earning the honor.

• Senior Liam Johnston earned All-SoCon for the second straight year. He finished his career with a 74.01 stroke average which is the ninth-best in school history. He had the team's top round with a 6-under par 66 in the second round at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
• Weathers became the first Mocs freshman to garner two top 5 finishes since Jaeger in 2009. Weathers' duo came to close the fall slate at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate (T5) and opening the spring at Davidson (T2).
• Sophomore Wes Gosselin improved his stroke average almost a stroke per round (0.75) ending up at 73.65, second to Johnston (73.03). Gosselin led the squad in birdies (3.35/rd), rounds in the 60's (4) and par 5 scoring (4.71).
• All seven student-athletes that competed in 2014-15 turned in at least one par or better card.
• Dean's List students: Wes Gosselin (4.0), Liam Johnston, Ewan Scott, Zac Stolz (4.0), Stuart Thomas (4.0) and Kory Webb. Brooks Thomas joined those six on the Athletics Director's Honor Roll.
• The team posted a program-record 3.47 GPA in the spring improving on a 3.19 in the fall.
• Men's golf was one of a school-record eight programs to earn 2015 APR Public Recognition Awards. It is the fourth in a row for the golfers.

Women's Golf (Colette Murray, head coach) • 2nd SoCon
• Senior Agathe Sauzon and junior Emily McLennan made the All-Southern Conference squad. It is the third such mention for both student-athletes.

• Freshman Megan Woods made the SoCon All-Freshman team. She is the 10th Moc in the program's eight seasons to notch All-Freshman honors.
• The runner-up finish at the SoCon Championships broke a five-year title run. The Mocs have finished first or second in seven consecutive championships. It also snapped a streak of four straight individual winners.
• The ladies captured the Chattanooga Classic title extending its streak to nine straight campaigns with at least one tourney win.
• Sauzon's 74.90 scoring average is the fifth-best in school history. She is one of just two Mocs (Emma de Groot) to win multiple medalist honors during her collegiate career.
• McLennan set new career-bests for 18-hole score, 67 (-5) at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, and 54-hole total, 214 (-2) at the SoCon Championships.
• Freshman Cris Perez improved by nearly five shots per round (4.8) averaging 75.93 strokes per 18 in the spring.
• Dean's List students: Sarah Dolmovich, Isabella Loza (4.0), Emily McLennan (4.0), DeeDee Russell, Agathe Sauzon and Megan Woods (4.0).

Soccer (J.D. Kyzer, head coach) • 1-17-1, 0-9 SoCon/10th
• The Mocs advanced to Southern Conference Tournament.

• Crystal Mackezyk moved to fifth on the Mocs all-time chart for points (50) and goals (20) and is tied for seventh for assists (10). Her 172 shots attempted ranks fourth all-time for the Mocs.
• Clare Latham climbed to sixth all-time for assists with 11. Her seven last season ties for fourth on the Mocs single-season records list.
• The Mocs 159 saves is second most in school history.
• UTC ranked first in the league for saves (8.37/game).
• Hannah Dunn led the league in saves per game and was second in saves.
• Gavin McKinney was named head coach on Dec. 16, 2014.

Softball (Frank Reed, head coach)
     35-15, 12-5 SoCon/1st • Tournament Champions • NCAA Auburn Regional

• Chattanooga won its 14th SoCon regular season title, 13th tournament championship, while appearing in its 10th NCAA Regional Tournament.

• Head Coach Frank Reed was named the SoCon Coach of the Yeah for the eighth time in his career. Reed opened 2015 securing his 500th Chattanooga win with a 5-3 victory against Evansville on Feb. 6.  He won his 1,000th collegiate game with a 7-5 victory over Furman on April 11.
• Anyssa Robles was named the SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player after going 5-for-11 (.455) with a double, a homer, a run and six RBIs. The junior cathcer was responsible for two walk-off hits in the Mocs' first two games of the tournament.  Seniors Taylor Deason and Nicole Osterman were named to the SoCon All-Tournament team.
• Six players made the various All-SoCon teams in the regular season.  Osterman, Sarah Beth Roberts and Criket Blanco were named to the SoCon first team, while shortstop J.J. Hamill was recognized on the SoCon second team and all freshman team. Cori Jennings and Kailey Palazzolo also made the all freshman team.

Men's Tennis (Carlos Garcia, head coach) • 5-16, 1-6 SoCon/7th
• Head coach Carlos Garcia wrapped up his 14th season with the Mocs, guiding a very young squad through a tough Southern Conference schedule.

• Junior Luke Saunders was the recipient of the Southern Conference's Don Bunch/Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award.
• Senior Pavels Grigorjevs, juniors Gino Delavalle and John Peacey, and sophomore Lucas Plesky made the Academic All-SoCon team.
• Junior Gino Delavalle led the team with a 14-12 singles record.   

Women's Tennis (Jeff Clark, head coach) • 18-4, 5-1 SoCon/2nd
• The Mocs scored 18 wins for the third year in a row, the most for the program since 1991.

• Both of UTC's non-conference losses were to ranked opponents.
• UTC finished second in the SoCon regular season race with a 5-1 mark, the best league finish since 2002.
• The Mocs scored their first win over Furman since 1997, snapping a 24-match losing streak to the Paladins.
• Samantha Caswell was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year.  She was 21-8 at No. 4 singles.  
• Caswell and junior Kalya Jones made the All-SoCon second team doubles with a 20-5 overall mark.
• Jones earned a spot on the All-SoCon first team with a 22-8 record at No. 1.
• Jones, seniors Claire Mulyadi and Kaylene Chadwell, and juniors Katie Polk and Alison Storie made the Academic All-SoCon team.
• UTC was ranked No. 8 in the final ITA Ohio Valley Regional rankings.
• The Mocs earned the ITA Team Academic Award. 

Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field (Bill Gautier, head coach)
     Men (6th-In/7th-Out) • Women (5th-In/5th-Out)

• The women's Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team of Rebecca Greenwall, Amanda Cotter, Maddison Melchionna and Kiaana Howard claimed Southern Conference indoor title.

• The men's DMR team of Trevor Janssen, Geoff Nelson, Marquis Carter and John Gilpin placed second at SoCon Indoor Championships.
• Carter and Melchionna also earned All-SoCon honors in the 800M infoor race.
• Paul Stuart earned all-conference honors in the men's 10K outdoors.
• Gilpin won two regular season races (3K Steeplechase and 1500m).
• Emily Drouin (3K SC), Amanda Cotter (1500m) and Keeley Stewart (10K) earned all-conference at the outdoor championships.
• Patrick O'Brien and John Gilpin were both named Capital One Academic All-District.

Volleyball (Travis Filar, head coach) – 13-19, 6-10 SoCon/6th
• Lauren Gainer led the team and was third in the SoCon with a .323 hitting percentage ... she was also fourth in the SoCon with 1.03 blocks per set.

• Allie Davenport was second in the SoCon with 48 aces.
• UTC had a four-match winning streak in SoCon play during early October.  It was the longest run for the team since 2012.
• Anne Bachmann, Sarah Batterton, Catherine Chason, Allie Davenport, Lauren Gainer, Brianna Guzinski and Nicole Sumida all made the Academic All-SoCon team.
• The Mocs posted two big wins in spring exhibition play, including a 2-0 victory over Tennessee and a 2-0 win over Ole Miss on March 28. 

Wrestling (Heath Eslinger, head coach) - 13-6, 7-0 SoCon/1st • 45th NCAAs
• The Mocs won their 29th Southern Conference title while sweeping both the regular season and tournament crowns.

• UTC sent seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and finished 45th, its best showing since 2008.
• Senior Sean Boyle was named the SoCon Wrestler of the Year and won the league title at 125.  
• Senior Nick Soto (133) won his fourth SoCon title, only the fourth in school history to do so.  He finished with a career record of 114-38, fourth most wins in school history.
• Sophomore Sean Mappes won the SoCon title at 174.
• Senior Shawn Greevy (149) and sophomore Michael Pongracz (141), Scottie Boykin (197) and Jared Johnson (285) also compete at the NCAAs.
• Chattanooga had one of the biggest wins in school history with a 19-16 win over Oklahoma in the NWCA National Duals.  UTC erased a 16-9 deficit with three matches left to advance to the quarterfinals of the national tournament.
