CHATTANOOGA -- The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-13, 25-10, 15-25, 25-19) victory over Furman in Maclellan Gym on Friday evening.
The win improved the Mocs record to 16-12 and 9-6 in the SoCon, moving them into sole possession of third-place. Furman fell to 10-18 and completed the regular season conference play at 6-10.
"I thought it was a great response," said coach
Travis Filar.
"It was a great week of practice as we challenged them four-days in a row to get better each day. We did a great job of playing for each other and played solid where we needed to, it was a great team win."
Chattanooga held Furman to a .088 attack percentage, the lowest opponent percentage since Oct. 7, while the Mocs hit at a .214 clip. UTC out-killed the Paladins 50-36 and out-dug 62-59 but lost the blocking battle 6.5-5.0.
The Mocs were led by a pair of double-doubles posted by
Allie Davenport and
Miranda Elpers as they both laid down 11 kills while Elpers collected 13 digs and Davenport finished with 11.
Dani Szczepanski finished with nine kills at an extremely efficient .615 percentage and picked up seven digs as
Kristy Wieser ended the match with eight kills.
Emily Plumlee chipped in with seven kills at a .375 clip.
Madison Bergren dished out a team-high 23 assists and
Lauren Greenspoon added 19.
Defensively, Chattanooga was anchored by
Lindsey Farrell, making her first career start, as she posted a team-high and career-high 13 digs while adding four assists. Szczepanski led the way at the net with 4.0 total blocks as
Eden Murray added 2.0 in the win.
1st SET | The Mocs jumped out to an early 7-3 lead by forcing three Furman errors and laying down three kills. The Paladins couldn't find an answer to UTC's attack and was forced to call a timeout at 14-8. Chattanooga held Furman to a -.026 attacking percentage in the first set and claimed a 25-13 victory.
2nd SET | Chattanooga once again raced out to an early lead at 8-3 and then proceeded to go on another 8-3 run to lead 16-6. A 25-10 second set victory was capped off by a pair of kills by Elpers and Plumlee.
3rd SET | Furman gained traction in the match and opened up the third set out of the break on a 13-3 run. The Mocs closed within five at 15-10 but the Paladins answered right back on a 6-0 run to make it 21-10 and finished off the set on a kill and Moc error 25-15, extending the match to the fourth set.
4th SET | Chattanooga looked to close out the match early as they started on an 8-3 run and forced a Furman timeout at 12-6 after a Davenport kill. The Mocs forced the Paladins second timeout after opening up a 17-9 lead on a Wieser kill. Furman battled back to make the score 21-17, but UTC forced four errors down the stretch to win the final set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
"I think if we stay strong and focus on our side it'll be a great way to end the season. We'll compete and play hard and it'll be a special night celebrating our seniors (Davenport and Wieser)."
Chattanooga returns to Maclellan Gym tomorrow evening for the regular season finale against UNCG at 6 p.m. as they celebrate
