Mocs Host Chattanooga Spring Classic Presented by Ruby Falls

UTC is coming off a 5-0 weekend at the NTC Tournament in Clermont, Fla.

The Chattanooga Mocs softball team hosts the Chattanooga Spring Classic presented by Ruby Falls to open up home action. UTC is off to a great start to the season with a 5-0 finish at the NTC tournament in Clermont, Fla., last weekend.

TICKETS
Tickets for the Chattanooga Spring Classic are $10 a day for adults and $5 a day for youth. UTC students are admitted free with a valid Mocs Card. Call the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627) or check the 'Ticket' link at the top of the page to order.

"Hopefully we get a good crowd," head coach Frank Reed stated. "It's always nice to play in front of our fans. We have a good field of teams coming in."

The Mocs recorded wins against Morgan State (4-3), Liberty (3-1), Bethune-Cookman (2-1 and 9-2) and Akron (6-3) over the weekend.

"We're still looking for a consistency going forward," commented Reed. "It's always good to win. We really want to continue our streak, but we still have a ways to go to get where I think we need to be. We have some growing to do."

Sophomore Cori Jennings was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for play Feb. 11-14. She tossed two complete games, boasting a 0.50 ERA on the weekend. Jennings allowed only eight hits and three walks facing 55 batters. 

Dayton, Wright State, Detroit Mercy, UT Martin and IPFW are all traveling to the tournament.

The Mocs start the weekend playing Dayton Friday at 1:30 p.m. (E.S.T). The last matchup between the two squads was Feb. 26, 2012 when UTC clinched a 19-0 win in the final game of the Frost Classic.

This is the first game of the season for the Flyers since the Campbell University Invitational got canceled due to inclement weather last weekend. Dayton was picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10. The squad put together a program-best 39-14 record last year, in addition to a 20-2 mark in league play.

UTC takes on Wright State Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The two teams were scheduled to play in the 2015 Frost Classic. However, the tournament was canceled because of inclement weather.

The Raiders started the season 1-4 at the Kick-Off Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. The squad posted a win over Penn State and losses to Tulsa, Hofstra, Florida Atlantic and SIU Edwardsville.

Chattanooga squares off with Detroit Mercy for the first time in program history Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Titans went 1-4 at the Texas Arlington Tournament. The squad recorded a nine-inning win over Missouri State and losses to Texas Southern, Northern Colorado and UT Arlington twice.

On Saturday at 4:00 p.m., the Mocs face UT Martin. Chattanooga took a 4-3 win over the Skyhawks in the last meeting between the two teams on Feb. 19, 2011.

UT Martin is 4-1 after wins over Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi Valley State and Buffalo in its opening home tournament. The squad's only loss is to Southern Illinois.

In the last matchup of the weekend, UTC takes on IPFW Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for the first time in program history. The Mastodons went 0-4 at the Charleston Southern Tournament, losing to Georgetown, Towson and Charleston Southern twice.
