Mocs Split Games on Second Day of Home Tournament

The Mocs came out on fire Saturday beating Detroit Mercy 14-0 before a 10-inning loss to UT Martin.

The Chattanooga Mocs softball team split games on the second day of the Chattanooga Spring Classic presented by Ruby Falls. UTC is 8-1 on the season.

"I hope that we can come out ready to play tomorrow," head coach Frank Reed stated. "One game does not define who you are, and we need to come out and play. It's about what we do down the road, and we have more games to play."

Chattanooga got off to a historical start, scoring 13 runs in the first inning against Detroit Mercy. This is a program record for the most runs in an inning. It eclipsed 12 against Alabama State on March 11, 1997. The Titans even made two pitching changes by the end of the first.

The Mocs took a convincing 14-0 win against the Titans. It was a one-hitter for sophomore Kailey Palazollo, improving to 2-0 from the mound.

Then, Chattanooga squared off with UT Martin in a 10-inning battle.

The Skyhawks got on the board with a score from Carly Gonzales in the first inning. Sophomore J.J. Hamill's home run in the bottom of the third tied it at 1-1.

UT Martin took the lead again in the fourth. But the Mocs answered in the sixth with a score by freshman Jordan Fortel. The next three innings were scoreless.

In the 10th inning, the Skyhawks scored four runs. The Mocs were unable to answer in the 6-2 loss.

"We hung in there and got the home run by J.J.," shared Reed. "I thought we were in the driver's seat. We won two games this weekend in the eighth inning. I think going into the late innings, we only had a few hits. You can't do that and expect to win."

UT Martin started the day off with an exciting 3-2 win against Wright State after being down 2-0 going into the seventh inning. IPFW beat out Detroit Mercy 3-1, and then Dayton beat the Mastodons 8-1. In the last game of the day, Wright State clinched a 5-2 victory over Dayton.

Chattanooga faces the Raiders Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and IPFW at 1:30 p.m.
