Mocs Split Games on Second Day of Frost Classic

UTC wraps up the weekend facing Northern Kentucky Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Frost Stadium.

The Chattanooga Mocs softball team defeated Miami (Ohio) 13-5 in a come-from-behind win and dropped a 6-2 contest to No. 18 Kentucky in front of a packed Frost Stadium. UTC moves to 10-5 after the second day of the Frost Classic presented by Ruby Falls.

"We came out and played better than we did yesterday," head coach Frank Reed stated. "We put some runs on the board and hit the ball like we should."

In the Mocs first game of the day, the Redhawks took the lead initially, going up 2-0 in the second and then 4-1 in the fourth. Chattanooga fought back posting a 10-run inning in the bottom of the fourth.

UTC ended the game in the sixth inning by scoring two more times.

Four Mocs scored two runs, including freshman Jordan Fortel, senior Criket Blanco, sophomore Ashley Conner and sophomore J.J. Hamill as a pinch runner.

Blanco and senior Alyssa Taylor led the squad with three hits, while junior Jesslyn Stockard collected a game-best 15 putouts.

The victory was Fortel's second from the circle.

"It was a nice, solid win," Reed commented. "I felt like some of the momentum carried over to the second game."

Chattanooga's second matchup of the day was against the squad's first ranked opponent.

In the bottom of the first, Fortel started the game in exciting fashion with a home run to center field to put the Mocs up 1-0.

The Wildcats got on the board with a run in the third and followed with a two-run homer by Nikki Sagermann in the fourth.

Kentucky scored three more times in the fifth, while Chattanooga scored a run off a wild pitch in the sixth.

"We only had two hits against Kentucky in a 6-2 game, but I felt like we put a lot of balls in play," Reed explained. "We needed to have a good showing today and I think we got that."

UTC finishes the weekend facing Northern Kentucky Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Frost Stadium.

"Hopefully tomorrow we put together some more hits and had fun like we did today," said Reed.
