Mocs Travel South for Last Regular-Season Tournament

UTC faces Georgia Tech, USF, Rutgers, Hartford and UMass Lowell this weekend to finish regular-season tournament play.

The Chattanooga Mocs softball team travels to Clearwater, Fla., for the USF Under Armour Invitational March 18-20. UTC is 15-12 after a 2-3 finish at the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, S.C., last weekend.

Six Mocs have a .300 batting average or better, while five have a 1.000 fielding percentage. Senior Sam Taylor leads the squad with 20 runs, while senior Criket Blanco has a team-best 17 RBIs. The three pitchers for Chattanooga have combined for 134 strikeouts.

UTC faces Georgia Tech, USF, Rutgers, Hartford and UMass Lowell this weekend to finish regular-season tournament play.

The Mocs start the weekend against Georgia Tech Friday at 11:15 a.m. (E.D.T.) The ACC squad is 5-14 and 1-5 in league play, dropping three games to Boston College last weekend. Prior to that, the Jackets lost to Louisville twice and beat the Cardinals once.

Chattanooga faces USF Friday at 1:45 p.m. The Bulls boast a 19-9 record and are on an 11-game winning streak, clinching 17 of their last 19 games.

USF and UTC have one common opponent, College of Charleston. The Bulls beat the Cougars 4-1 on March 5, while the Mocs clinched a 2-1 win last weekend.

On Saturday, UTC faces Rutgers at 11:45 a.m. Chattanooga leads the series 3-1.

The Scarlet Knights are 9-14 coming off a 3-2 finish at the Florida Atlantic Tournament. The squad beat LIU Brooklyn, Mercer and Massachusetts and lost to Robert Morris and Florida Atlantic.

The Mocs square off with Hartford Saturday at 2:15 p.m. The two squads faced each other last season at the USF Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament. Chattanooga came out with a 10-1 win.

The Hawks have a 2-16 record. Last weekend the squad went 1-4, falling to IPFW, Winthrop, Southern Illinois and Green Bay and beating Bowling Green.

UTC wraps up the tournament Sunday at 9:00 a.m. against UMass Lowell. The last meeting between the two teams was Feb. 13, 2015, where the River Hawks took a 9-5 victory.

At 4-12, UMass Lowell went 1-4 at the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament last weekend, posting losses to IPFW, Detroit, USC-Upstate and Butler and a win over North Dakota.
