The Chattanooga Mocs softball team dropped battles to Longwood 7-6 and Northwestern State 6-5 on the second day of the Bulldog Slamboree in Starkville, Ala. UTC is 12-8.
In the first game of the day, the Lancers jumped to an early lead, scoring twice in both the first and fourth innings.
The Mocs played an impressive fifth. It started with senior
Alyssa Taylor singling off a bunt. Then, freshman
Jordan Fortel walked and seniorÂ
Anyssa Robles hit a single to left field, loading the bases.
Senior
Criket Blanco followed with a single down the right field line. Taylor and Fortel made it home.
Robles scored off a hit by sophomore
Ashley Conner. To tie the game up, Blanco earned a run after a sacrifice fly from freshman
Katie Corum.
Bringing Conner home, senior
Amanda Ross had the fifth and last hit of the inning, giving the Mocs a 5-4 lead.
Longwood answered with a home run by Justina Augustine. Then, Robles putout Jamie Barbour at home plate to keep the score 5-5.
With the international tie breaker rule in place at the Bulldog Slamboree, a runner gets put on second base to start each inning after the seventh.
Freshman
Alyssa Coppinger was Chattanooga's runner on second. She made it home off Ross's second RBI of the game.
The Lancers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, clinching the game.
In the second matchup of the day, Northwestern State got off to a quick start scoring three runs, including two back-to-back home runs in the second inning.
Blanco got the Mocs on the board with a home run down the left field line in the top of the fourth, making it 3-1.
The Demons scored their fourth run of the game in the fifth.
Chattanooga fought back in the sixth inning with four straight RBI singles. Senior
Sam Taylor,
Alyssa Taylor, Fortel and Robles all had RBI's, while Corum, Beltran, Ross and
Sam Taylor scored.
Northwestern State took the lead back for the rest of the game after scoring two runsÂ
in the bottom of the sixth.UTC squares off with Central Arkansas Sunday at 12:30 p.m. to wrap up the Mocs fourth tournament of the season.
