Â
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.---It was a solid start today for Chattanooga Mocs junior
Wes Gosselin. He opened play at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regionals with a 1-over par 73 at Ol' Colony Golf Complex.
Â
A good start, he was -1 through four holes, was spoiled by a bogey-double-bogey run on holes five through seven to drop to +3. He recovered with back-to-back birdies on nine and 10 before bogeys on 11 and 13.
Â
Gosselin turned the corner at the 14th. It started with a perfect drive that left him with a 6 iron second shot on the 549-yard par 5.
Â
"Coming off bogey at 13, I was definitely not pleased," he explained. "I hit a really good drive on 14. The pin was tucked away left. It's one of those holes that if you hit it in the middle of the green with it working left at all, you're going to catch the slope.
Â
"Hit a 6-iron with a little draw, probably the best shot of the day, kind of caught the slope, and it ended up at about 4 feet."
Â
He made the eagle putt and then parred the final four for his 73.
Â
"It wasn't a bad round, I just didn't get much going," he added. "I hit some really good shots. Made birdie on nine, which definitely helped backed up by a birdie on 10. Overall, it was a pretty good day."
Â
The trio of Jeremy Paul (Colorado), Greyson Sigg (Georgia) and Zach Healy (Georgia) take the early lead at -4. Michael Johnson (Auburn) is alone in fourth at -3.
Â
Gosselin returns to the tee at 11:01 a.m., Eastern time, Tuesday. His second round begins on No. 10. Click the "Notes" and "Live Scoring" links above for more information. Follow @GoMocsMGLF on Twitter for updates.
