Mocs Fall to No. 2 Ohio State

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team dropped a 39-3 dual to No. 2 Ohio State at The Cooler in Alpharetta, Ga., today.  The Mocs fall to 2-3 on the year with all three losses against top-10 opponents.  The Buckeyes improved to 6-0 with today's win.

UTC actually jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind junior Alonzo Allen's win at 125 over Brakan Mead.  Allen opened in a flurry with a quick takedown over Mead.  With a 2-1 lead after the first, Allen chose down and escaped mid-way through the second.  He continued to be aggressive and earned a stalling call on Mead before the end of the second.

Mead escaped in the third, but not before Allen erased his riding time point.  Allen went up 4-1 when Mead was called for stalling a second time.  Another big takedown with 30 seconds left gave Allen a 6-2 advantage before Mead escaped at the buzzer.  The win moved Allen to 6-4 on the year.

"Great way to start it off with a win," stated head coach Heath Eslinger.  "This was a great event and a great atmosphere and we competed against a great team.  We knew our first semester schedule was going to test us and we were willing to take those tests.  I believe it will pay dividends when things matter most."

The lead was short-lived as Ohio State won a major decision at 133.  Each of the last nine Buckeyes to take the mat are ranked in the top-11 in the country, with seven in the top five and two No. 1s.

The Mocs had chances at 184 and 197.  No. 15 Bryce Carr, who along with fellow seniors Scottie Boykin and Michael Pongracz graduated on Saturday, had a tough match with No. 2 Myles Martin.  Martin scored four takedowns in the match for a 10-4 decision.  Carr moved to 9-3 on the year with all three losses to top-7 opponents.

Boykin, also ranked No. 15 at 197, took on top-ranked Kollin Moore.  Moore controlled the match, posting an 18-8 major decision.  Boykin fell to 9-3 on the year and all three of his losses have come against wrestlers in the top-8 at 197 pounds.

Up next for the Mocs is a dual meeting with Ohio tomorrow night in Maclellan Gym.  Action starts at 7:00 p.m. (E.S.T.).  Links for tickets, scoring and video are on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.
