CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs softball team pushed across 16 runs in two games on Friday, but earned just a split as they defeated Radford 10-3 before falling to Tennessee Tech 7-6 in the Chattanooga
Challenge at Frost Stadium.
With the split, UTC is now 3-4 on the season. Radford fell to 1-1 while Tennessee Tech picked up their first win of the season and is now 1-6.

The Mocs found themselves in a hole early on as the Highlanders scored three runs in the first two innings by way of three hits and two UTC errors. After a single to start the game off, the Radford runner stole second and later scored on a single up the middle. RU scored the second run of the first on a fielder's choice. A walk and hit-by-pitch put two on for Radford and scored the runner from second on a single and error in the outfield.
Chattanooga answered in the bottom of the third with a five run outburst.
Hayleigh Weissenbach singled to begin the inning and scored from first on an
Aly Walker double to left-center to put the first UTC run on the board.
Ashley Conner followed Walker up with a homerun over the center field fence to tie the game at 3-3. After
Amanda Beltran was hit by a pitch,
Brook Womack smacked the second Moc homerun of the inning and gave Chattanooga a 5-3 lead.
The Mocs would add a run in the bottom of the fourth on a
J.J. Hamill triple to right-center, scoring Weissenbach who got on base via hit-by-pitch. UTC tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Hamill joined the homerun parade with a three-run homer after the Mocs pushed one across on an
Emma Sturdivant RBI double. Sturdivant drove in
Alyssa Coppinger who hit a double to right-center. That would end the Chattanooga scoring and leave a 10-3 final in favor of the Mocs.
Eight different Mocs recorded a hit as Conner led the way with a 3-for-4, two RBI performance at the plate. Hamill went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Sturdivant stayed hot with a 2-for-3 and RBI line game at the plate. Weissenbach scored two runs and went 1-for-3.
Payten Price (2-2) earned the win in the circle tossing 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs (one earned) while striking out two. She now carries a 3.08 ERA this season in 25.0 innings work.

The Golden Eagles struck first in the top of the first on back-to-back hits including a single and RBI double to right-center to take a 1-0 lead. The Mocs rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the second to a take a 2-1 lead after Conner started the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Beltran scored the second run on a fielding error on the right fielder off the bat of Sturdivant.
TTU posted four runs in the top of the third by way of back-to-back homeruns, taking a 5-2 lead and forcing Chattanooga starting pitcher
Alex Connell out of the game.
Maddy Adams came in relief of Connell in the circle. Both teams traded two runs each in the fifth inning as TTU scored both runs on a two-run homer and Chattanooga's came by way a Walker two-RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded.
With the Mocs trailing 7-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Womack started the comeback attempt with a single to right-center and later advanced on a wild pitch. Sturdivant advanced Womack to third with a ground-out and Coppinger drove her in on a sacrifice fly to right field, cutting the deficit to 7-5. Back-to-back doubles with one out in the final at-bat for UTC cut the TTU lead to 7-6, but the Mocs failed to score the tying run from second after a fly-out and ground-out ended the game.
Connell (1-2) took the loss for the Mocs going 2.2 innings, allowing five hits, five runs (four earned) while striking out one. Adams threw in relief, tossing 4.1 innings, giving up six hits and two runs (both earned). She struck out two and walked one. Walker and Conner both went 2-for-4 at the dish as Walker drove in three. Womack went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
For the season, four Mocs are currently hitting over the .300 mark as Strudivant leads with a .500 average (7-for-14), Conner is hitting .409 (9-for-22), Walker is at .400 (8-for-20) and Womack sits at .308 (4-for-13). Conner and Womack share a team-high five RBIs while Conner leads with two HRs and nine hits and is slugging at a team-best .727%.
Chattanooga returns to action tomorrow with a pair of games at Frost Stadium against IUPUI (0-7) at 1:30 p.m. and Kennesaw State (5-2) at 4:00 p.m.
