Mocs Head to SoCon Championships on Saturday

Action takes place at The Citadel's McAlister Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C.
The Chattanooga Mocs are off to the 80th annual Southern Conference Wrestling Tournament in Charleston, S.C., this weekend. The Mocs have won 29 SoCon Tournament titles since joining the league in 1978, including five of the last six and 10 of the last 12.
The SoCon was allocated 18 spots for the NCAA Championships, with three each at 125 pounds, 184 and heavyweight, two each at 149 and 157 and one each at the eight other weights.
Last season's wrestling championship came down to the wire, as Appalachian State's Dejournette downed Chattanooga's Johnson in the heavyweight final to clinch the Mountaineers' first title since 2003. Dejournette's win pushed App State's team score to 83.5 points, just half a point ahead of runner-up Chattanooga.
This year's tournament is wide open, despite Appalachian State's 13-3 dual record and No. 24 national ranking. The Mocs dual with the Mountaineers went to criteria with ASU winning 17-16. The Citadel has the most all-conference competitors while Campbell is the favorite based on seeding.
Six of last year's SoCon individual champions will be back in the field this year, though two of them are in different weight classes.

Head Coach Heath Eslinger is in his eighth season at UTC. A two-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year, he owns an 93-54 (.633) career dual record. He has guided the Mocs to six SoCon regular season and six SoCon tournament titles and has a 45-4 record in SoCon duals.
Close Losses
Of the Mocs' nine losses this year, four have been by three points or less. This includes a 17-16 defeat at No. 17 Appalachian State that was decided on criteria.

125: Sophomore Alonzo Allen takes a 14-11 record into the postseason. He is 6-2 against the SoCon field this season and 8-6 in his career.
He is 0-3 all-time against top-seeded Vito Passone and has an 11-4 decision against No. 13 Nathan Kraisser earlier in the year. llen went 2-2 at last year's tournament and is the No. 2 seed this year.
The SoCon initially had three spots at 125 when the NCAA made its first allocations announcement, but later in the day, the NCAA recalled one spot due to a miscalculation. However, another adjustment was made this week and there are again three spots up for grabs at 125 this weekend.

184: The 184 bracket is loaded with three allocations up for grabs. Junior Bryce Carr is 22-4 and ranked No. 18 in the Intermat Top-20 this week. He is the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Carr split a pair of matches with Campbell's top-seeded Ville Heino. He won the first 12-5 at the Southern Scuffle, but lost in the Jan. 28 dual 3-1 in overtime. Henio is ranked No. 17 in the Intermat Top-20.
Carr also posted two close wins over Gardner-Webb's third-seeded Hunter Gamble. Carr won 7-4 at the Scuffle and 4-2 in the dual on Feb. 3.

285: For the second year in a row, there are three spots on the line at heavyweight. Senior Jared Johnson is currently No. 10 in the Intermat rankings and the No. 3 seed in the SoCon tournament. He is 23-6 overall and 5-2 in league duals.
Appalachian State's Denzel Dejournette is the top seed in the tournament at No. 9 in the Intermat Poll. Johnson is 0-5 all-time against Dejournette, losing all five in tight decisions.
The No. 2 seed in the field is Campbell's Jere Heino. He pulled off a 9-4 upset against Johnson in the Jan. 28 dual. Johnson did post a 5-0 win over Heino in last year's dual on Dec. 13, 2015.
The Mocs have not had a heavyweight champion in the SoCon Tournament since Matt Koz in 2007.

184: The 184 bracket is loaded with three allocations up for grabs. Junior Bryce Carr is 22-4 and ranked No. 18 in the Intermat Top-20 this week. He is the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Carr split a pair of matches with Campbell's top-seeded Ville Heino. He won the first 12-5 at the Southern Scuffle, but lost in the Jan. 28 dual 3-1 in overtime. Henio is ranked No. 17 in the Intermat Top-20.
Carr also posted two close wins over Gardner-Webb's third-seeded Hunter Gamble. Carr won 7-4 at the Scuffle and 4-2 in the dual on Feb. 3.

285: For the second year in a row, there are three spots on the line at heavyweight. Senior Jared Johnson is currently No. 10 in the Intermat rankings and the No. 3 seed in the SoCon tournament. He is 23-6 overall and 5-2 in league duals.
Appalachian State's Denzel Dejournette is the top seed in the tournament at No. 9 in the Intermat Poll. Johnson is 0-5 all-time against Dejournette, losing all five in tight decisions.
The No. 2 seed in the field is Campbell's Jere Heino. He pulled off a 9-4 upset against Johnson in the Jan. 28 dual. Johnson did post a 5-0 win over Heino in last year's dual on Dec. 13, 2015.
