The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team heads to Greenville, S.C, for the 2017 Southern Conference Tournament this weekend. The Mocs take on top-seeded ETSU at 9:00 a.m. (E.D.T.).
"The Southern Conference Tennis Championships is such a fantastic event and one of the most special tournaments our student athletes will ever experience," said head coach
Carlos Garcia.
"Everything is on the line right from the beginning, and because of the competitiveness of every team in our league, the 2017 title can be had by any team, including Chattanooga."
The Mocs (5-16, 0-7 SoCon) lost to ETSU (13-7, 7-0 SoCon) 7-0 on March 25 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga. UTC is trying to snap an eight-match skid to the Bucs, who hold an 18-11 advantage in the all-time series.
"We know our path is difficult, starting off with league champion ETSU, added Garcia. "We enjoy playing this team and there is a mutual respect for each other. It just comes down to who is better on that particular day and nothing else.
"It is not about who has won this or who has won that, it is just about who is better on Friday. I can't think of a better way to get things started at this year's tournament."
UTC is second all-time in SoCon history with 12 league titles. The Mocs last won the crown in 2000, took eight in a row from 1978-85, and also won in 1988 and 1989.
