The 2016-17 athletics season saw the Mocs capture another Southern Conference regular season and tournament title in women's basketball. UTC had five All-Americans, three SoCon Players of the Year, one SoCon Tournament MVPs, two individual SoCon Champs, an Academic All-American and 63 on the Academic All-SoCon Team.

Men's Basketball (Matt McCall, head coach) • 19-12, 10-8 SoCon/T4th
• Justin Tuoyo won his third straight Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year award. It's the fourth year in a row a Moc has claimed the honor (Z. Mason – 2013-14). Tuoyo moved into 4th-place on the SoCon's all-time blocks list with 270. He set the UTC career record in January 2016.
• Tuoyo (1st team) and Tre' McLean (3rd team) earned All-SoCon mention.
• Casey Jones (1,321), Greg Pryor (1,203) and Tuoyo (1,115) became the first trio of 1,000-point scorers to have eclipsed the total on the same team.
• The Mocs opened the season with a win at Tennessee. Marked back-to-back years beginning the campaign with a road win over an SEC foe (at Georgia, 2015-16).

Lamont Paris was named the program's 20th head coach in April after Matt McCall's departure for UMass.
Women's Basketball (Jim Foster, head coach)
21-11, 12-2 SoCon/T1st/Tournament Champions • NCAA 1st Round
• Tied for first in the SoCon Regular Season, earned top seed for SoCon Tournament.
• 21st SoCon regular season title (1984).
• Won the SoCon Tournament; 18th SoCon Tournament title (1984).
• Won fifth straight SoCon Tournament title – a record. Broke four straight titles won by UTC from 2001-04.
• UTC's 15th trip to the NCAA; 30th trip for
Jim Foster (four schools).
• 21st season with 20 or more wins … sixth straight.
• Jasmine Joyner named SoCon Defensive Player of the Year (fourth straight by a UTC player).
• Jasmine Joyner named SoCon All-Conference First Team by coaches and media.
• Chelsey Shumpert named SoCon All-Conference Second Team by coaches and media.
• Queen Alford named SoCon All-Conference Third Team by coaches and media; Keiana Gilbert named SoCon All-Conference Third Team by coaches.
• Lakelyn Bouldin named All-Freshman by SoCon coaches and media.
• Jasmine Joyner named SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player … first team.
• Chelsey Shumpert and Lakelyn Bouldin named to All-Tournament Second Team.
• Ansley Chilton received the Pinnacle Award for player on championship team with highest GPA.
• Jasmine Joyner finished the season ranked third in the NCAA for blocked shots per game (3.81), second for total blocked shots (122).
• NCAA rankings: Joyner ranked 11th for defensive rebounds per game, 17th for rebounds per game (10.5) 18th for total rebounds (336) and 23 for double-doubles (15).
• Joyner finished her career with 436 blocks, a UTC and SoCon record and ranks eighth all-time in the NCAA and 14th for blocked shots per game (3.574) over her career.
Cross Country (Andy Meyer, head coach)
Men (4th SoCon/18th NCAA Regional) • Women (4th SoCon/23rd NCAA Regional)
• Chattanooga hosted the SoCon Championships at Camp Jordan
• Women placed fourth in the SoCon Cross Country Championships, just two points out of third.
• Men also placed fourth at the SoCon meet.
• Paul Stuart and Brennan Huber were named to the SoCon All-Conference Second Team.
• Paul Stuart earned CoSIDA Academic All-District for the second straight year.
Football (Russ Huesman, head coach)
• 9-4, 6-2 SoCon/T2nd • NCAA FCS 2nd Round
• UTC capped off another outstanding season with its third consecutive trip to the FCS Playoffs. Chattanooga posted a 9-4 record and tied with Wofford for second in the SoCon at 6-2 in league play.
• The Mocs advanced to the second round of the FCS Playoffs for the third year in a row and ended with a No. 10 final national ranking. Chattanooga earned an at-large bid for the first time in school history and opened with a 45-14 win over No. 23 Weber State at home. Chattanooga's season ended at No. 1 Sam Houston State (41-36) in the second round.
• Senior Keionta Davis was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year by the league's coaches. He also finished ninth (school-record) in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award.
• Senior Corey Levin was a consensus All-American and a sixth-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans.
• Davis and Levin were joined on various All-American teams by Derrick Craine, Nakevion Leslie and Jacob Revis.
• The 2016 senior class graduated with a school-record 36 victories.
• Head Coach Russ Huesman left for Richmond following the season and was replaced by
Tom Arth.
Men's Golf (Mark Guhne, head coach) • 4th SoCon
• Seniors Wes Gosselin and Brooks Thomas earned All-Southern Conference honors. It was the second such award for Gosselin and first for Thomas.
• Gosselin, B. Thomas and sophomore Etienne Brault each won tournaments during the campaign. Gosselin's came at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate in February, while Thomas (USA Individual) and Brault (Trevecca Men's Invite) captured theirs in individual events.
• Gosselin and junior Stuart Thomas qualified for the Golf Coaches Association of America All-America Scholar award.
• For the first time since Steven Fox's U.S. Amateur Championship in 2012, UTC had a golfer qualify. 2017 grad B. Thomas qualified in early July followed by incoming freshman Connor Nolan.
• Former Mocs All-American Stephan Jaeger '12 clinched his PGA Tour card for 2018 on the Web.com Tour in early June 2017.
Women's Golf (Colette Murray, head coach) • 2nd SoCon
• For the ninth straight year,
Colette Murray's ladies finished in the top 2 in the league ending up second at the Southern Conference Championships. Wins in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 are sandwiched by runners-up in 2009, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
• Sophomore Monica San Juan garnered her first All-Southern Conference award.
• Holly Morgan merited a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman squad.
• San Juan's 74.65 stroke average was the best in school history by a sophomore topping teammate Megan Woods' 74.86 in 2015-16.
• 299.68 team stroke average is second-best in program history behind last year's 296.43.
Soccer (Gavin McKinney, head coach) • 6-11-2, 4-4-1 SoCon/T5th
• Tied for fifth in Southern Conference regular season standings. Best finish since 2004 (T4th).
• Jordan Mueller and Hannah Torbett were named to the all-freshman team.
• Earned a first round SoCon Tournament bye; fell in quarterfinals
• National rankings: 89th in NCAA for fewest fouls per game – 7.84.
• Tied for most team goals in SoCon with eight against Alabama A&M (8/21/16).
• Second in the SoCon for most points in a game with 23 vs. Alabama A&M (8/21/16).
• Peyton McCollum tied for most points in a game with six vs. Alabama A&M (8/21/16).
Softball (Frank Reed, head coach) – 15-38, 7-11 SoCon/7th
• Five Mocs earned All-Southern Conference honors in 2017. Sophomore Emma Sturdivant was selected the All-SoCon First Team while senior Katy Richardson was named to the second team.
• Amy Lewis, Aly Walker and Hayleigh Weissenbach all notched spots as outfielders on the All-SoCon Freshman Team. Walker led the team with a .327 batting average while Weissenbach paced the team with 27 runs scored.
• Ashley Conner was named to the Southern Conference All-Tournament team after leading all tournament participants with a .556 batting average, two home runs and a 1.222% slugging percentage.
• The Mocs defeated second-seeded Furman in the opening round of the Southern Conference Championships before dropping a pair of one-run games to conclude the season.
• Chattanooga hosted the SoCon Tournament at Frost Stadium.
Men's Tennis (Carlos Garcia, head coach) • 5-17, 0-7 SoCon/8th
• The Mocs went 5-17 in 2017, including an 0-7 mark in Southern Conference action.
• Freshman Simon Bustamante led the team with a 13-11 singles record. He was 7-3 at No. 4 in the spring and won two conference matches.
• Niklas Gerdes made the SoCon All-Freshman team. After joining the team in January, he posted an 8-12 record, mostly at No. 2.
• Seniors Lucas Plesky, Derrick Brown and Nic Wilson all ended their careers in 2016-17.
• Gerdes and Wilson teamed up for a 3-2 record at No. 1 doubles in the spring. Gerdes and Bustamante also had a 5-1 mark at No. 1.
• Plesky, junior Michael Birnbaum and sophomore Pablo Llebeili all represented the Mocs on the Academic All-SoCon team.
• Head coach Carlos Garcia resigned following the season and
Chuck Merzbacher was hired in July.
Women's Tennis (Chad Camper, head coach) • 14-7, 4-3 SoCon/T3rd
• The Mocs went 14-7 under first-year head coach
Chad Camper in 2017. It is the sixth-straight year with at least 14 wins. UTC also finished third in the SoCon race with a 4-3 league record.
• Chattanooga has finished at least third for four years in a row.
• Junior Samantha Caswell was a second-team All-SoCon pick in singles with a 12-8 mark at No. 1 in the spring.
• Caswell and senior Rachele Gazzola teamed up for a 12-6 mark at No. 1 doubles, earning second team All-SoCon honors.
• Sophomore Caroline Hall led the team with a 24-7 record, including a 12-3 mark at No. 4 in the spring.
• Sophomore Sydney Patton posted a 19-13 overall, including a 12-3 mark at No. 3 in the spring.
• Caswell, Patton and sophomore Mckenzie Barco made the Academic All-SoCon team.
Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field (Andy Meyer, head coach) • 7th-In/10th-Out)
• Finished seventh in SoCon Indoor Track Championships.
• Freshman Kennedy Thomson was fourth in the 800 meter finals – indoor.
• Finished 10th in the SoCon Outdoor Championships.
• Kelsey Henry and Taylor Sawyer named to the SoCon All-Freshman team for 200m.
• Maddison Melchionna earned CoSIDA Academic All-District for the second straight year.
Volleyball (Travis Filar, head coach) – 19-13, 10-6 SoCon/3rd
• For the second-straight year, the Mocs finished second in the Southern Conference Championships after concluding 2016 with a 19-13 overall record. It is only the third time appearing in the championship match since 2001.
• UTC captured the Chattanooga Classic title with four-straight wins to begin the season and later earned a 3-1 victory over BIG EAST member Xavier during the Dayton Invitational.
• Chattanooga defeated Ole Miss 3-2 in the Scenic City Showdown at Maclellan Gym, notching the first win over an SEC opponent in program history.
• Kristy Wieser was named to the All-SoCon First Team while Dani Szczepanski represented the Mocs on the All-SoCon Freshman Team. Wieser led the team with 323 kills, averaging 2.74 kills per set, while Szczepanski totaled a team-best 94.0 blocks.
• Miranda Elpers and Eden Murray were selected to the All-Tournament team during the Southern Conference Championships after appearing in the title match.
Wrestling (Heath Eslinger, head coach) - 7-9, 5-2 SoCon/3rd • 69th NCAAs
• The Mocs posted a 7-9 overall record, 5-2 in the Southern Conference. UTC placed 4th at the SoCon Championships.
• Of the Mocs' nine losses this year, four were by three points or less. This includes a 17-16 defeat at No. 17 Appalachian State that was decided on criteria.
• Sophomore Chris Debien (133) and junior Bryce Carr (184) both won Southern Conference individual titles.
• Chattanooga sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, including Debien (133), Carr (184) and senior Jared Johnson (285).
• Johnson spent most of the season ranked in the top 10 at heavyweight and was the No. 11 seed at the NCAAs. He posted a 26-9 overall mark, won the Lindenwood Open and placed sixth at the Southern Scuffle.
• Junior Justin Lampe made the All-SoCon team after posting a 16-11 record and 6-1 mark in league matches. He finished third at the SoCon Tournament.
• Johnson, senior Sean Mappes and sophomore Chase Zemenak made the Academic All-SoCon.
