Freshman
Kerim Hyatt posted two wins in consolation action to advance to Monday's consolation finals. Hyatt won a tough match in the quarters with a tiebreaker win in the second set over Tennessee Tech's Carlos Vicente [6-1, 7-6 (6)].
Hyatt followed that with a three-set victory against Indiana's William Piekarsky in the semifinals [6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (5)]. Hyatt opened with a 6-1 win in the first frame, but dropped the second 6-4. That forced a 10-point super breaker for the third, which Hyatt won 10-5.
"He is paying really, really smart," stated head coach
Chuck Merzbacher. "He has a big, left-handed serve that is giving guys all kinds of trouble.
"This is such a great showing by a freshman. He has beaten some really good players who are 1-2-3 on their teams."
Hyatt is scheduled to face ETSU's Juan Lugo in the consolation finals tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (E.D.T.) at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn. Lugo, a junior, played No. 2 for the Buccaneers last season.
